Re: Do You Drum While Not Drumming?

All the time, particularly when there's music going on. I've done it since I was a kid, long before I even thought about actually playing drums. When I got my first kit, I already knew how to count,...

Re: The thing you bought but you never use

I've seen quite a few people play their congas with sticks. That's how I would play them if I bought a set, but I don't currently have space for them.

Re: You love the idea of it, but you are never happy with it (Drum gear)

Ditto with the big dark cymbals. I even have a dark cymbal set 22" ride, 18" crash and 14" hats, but when I play them I'm always missing the sound of my bright cymbals. And they just don't fit with...

Re: The thing you bought but you never use

1) Toca Bordeaux cajon. I already had a cheap cajon that my wife bought for me, but I saw the Toca at a store and really liked it. Took it home and after a while, I found out I liked my other one...

Re: Your plans for 2018 with drums?

1) Work a bit on Stick Control. Something I've never done in 27+ years of drumming.

2) Learn to record drums properly.

3) Play some jazz.

Re: Concerned about my ride cymbal for a quiet jazz gig

Can't you just try options 1, 2 and 3 during a rehearsal and see which one works best? Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes.

Re: Johan Segeborn - Multi Instrumentalist

Yeah, that's pretty much my goal. To be decent enough to play along with friends, record my own songs, etc. I'm too old and introvert for stardom.

Not yet. I mean, I have recorded lots of...

Re: Johan Segeborn - Multi Instrumentalist

I'm an aspiring multi-instrumentalist who kinda sucks at everything :)

I've been dabbling with keyboards forever but don't have any real chops to show off. Love doing music with synths, sequencers...

Re: My latest kit: 88 up - 3 down - black wrap

Very nice. Reminds me of the Yamaha P-80 I had for several years. It was actually my wife's. I bought it for her when we got married because we didn't have much space and were moving to another town....

Re: Selling Drum set Tips

I think $200 is a bit steep. I've seen full starter drum sets (without cymbals or with very cheap cymbals like Pearl's) for that much.

To put things in context, you can get a new no-name starter...

Re: New drum goodies from Santa?

The new P/J one. I was looking for a short-scale and fell in love with the Capri Orange the moment I saw it.

Re: Do you necessarily like to play the drums to the music you like?

When I started playing drums, I was pretty much only into hip hop. I always played along the music and added my own ornaments. No one ever complained :)

Re: New drum goodies from Santa?

Nothing drum related this year. I bought a Fender Mustang bass for myself and my brother-in-law gave me a nice strap for it. Will start taking bass lessons next week :)

Re: Has anyone taken a Drumcation before?

Yesterday I was informed that my request for a sabbatical year has been approved. So I will dedicate most of 2018 to improve my musical skills. Will finally put everything into learning guitar and...

Re: New Years Resolutions???

Overcome GAS and learn to play what I have.

I don't have too much drum stuff (only two kits with their respective cymbal sets - no expensive stuff, either), but I also have guitars, basses, amps,...

Re: Your drumming education?

I'm 100% self-taught - something that I'm both proud and not proud of. Proud because I think I'm an ok drummer, and not proud because I know I could be better, but I never really practice.

Started...

Re: Guitar breaks my drum sticks!

Stop hitting the guitar player in the head. That should solve the problem.

Re: Beginner - easy songs are freaking hard!

Another One Bites The Dust - straight 4 on the floor and one relatively simple fill

My advice to beginners is: go easy on the hi-hats. I've seen quite a few beginners hitting the hats really hard...

Re: What does your kit say about your "drum nerdiness"?

I got zero points. Not sure if that makes me very cool or very boring.

Re: 3/4 Messed With My Mind

Happens to me as well. Specifically with The Tourist, by Radiohead. It's the last song on OK Computer, which I used to play from beginning to end (and I often tried to sing along). It's a slow song...

Re: Do you wear rings when drumming?

I take my wedding ring off when I'm drumming, hand-drumming, or playing bass.

Otherwise, my instruments might get jealous. :)

My pockets are always stuffed with keys, wallet, phone, etc. Most...

Re: Band wants to use programmed drums on record

And no matter what your bandmates think, at least try to have the record mixed and mastered professionally. It'll be a good investment.

Re: Band wants to use programmed drums on record

I totally agree and would add that besides knowing what you're doing, you need some decent equipment. A couple mics into a cheap 2-channel interface won't cut it. Not in my experience. Plus you have...

Re: Band wants to use programmed drums on record

Record the MIDI out from the DTX into Ableton and then route the MIDI track through Ableton's drum sampler. I don't use Ableton so I don't know exactly how to do this, but it sure can be done.

I...
