I”m really not sure how the sound of a drum changes as you go up in mass - say 3mm to 4mm... It may depend on the type/quality of the metal, edges, etc.

But for great sound - 3mm seems like the...

Re: Cast metal snares.

Heavier gauge shells tend to project more. I have a 3mm steel Keplnger and it’s the loudest drum I own. It also has the most body and fatness - something you wouldn’t expect from a thicker shell.

Re: Jazz/Funk Books/DVD's

For Jazz - Jim Blackley’s The Essence of Jazz Drumming. For everything else I really like Kim Plainfield’s Advanced Concepts. He covers a lot of different styles and techniques.

Re: How to improve rhythm and timing of each note? (Issues with bass drum strokes being slightly off

That’s great, John - I definitely like to switch between being right on the click, and playing off of it.

Herzeleid, Dom Famularo has a great unison exercise where you play all of the different...

Re: Learning the Rebound Stroke

Hey Mart - I think it’s great that you’re starting with Full strokes, it’s those more exaggerated motions that help get the hang of new techniques...

• For Full strokes (Using your wrists and...

Re: Exercises to hit the 'middle' of a beat?

Experience with other players and recording those sessions will help a lot.

But also, here’s a version of an exercise I was shown, to fine tune your listening:
•On a practice pad - set a click to...

Re: DW Fans testers users, questions for you

Bang for the buck would be Performance series - which are great sounding drums, plus there are more size options now...

Sell it on eBay - say that it was from the set of Whiplash...

if I had noticed them before the drummer went home - he’d have a souvenir for the evening. It’s just a stick, throw it out.

Re: Using tuning to muffle 18" bass?

I’ve been kind of an Evans fan for a while now - I use one of those Frosted EQ4 batter heads and and EQ3 or 1 reso. Nothing in the drum, no muffling, and I can always get a nice round, full sound...

Re: Performance practice Wilcoxin

~110-120 is a typical tempo for rudimental solos (in 2/4) ~72-86 (in 6/8). But again, I don’t think it’s about playing the solos fast, but playing them well. When Philly Joe Jones would teach from...

Re: Tips on Ghost Notes.

I’ve always liked David Garibaldi’s explanation of stick heights on the kit. Like he says - he didn’t invent this concept, but it’s really helpful to break it down. His paradiddle permutation...

Re: Starting Back At The Basics Is Very Humbling

Definitely! Back around ’06 I met up with Dom Famularo and we completely revamped my technique. Talk about starting over - but the techniques make so much sense, they’re pretty easy to adapt. The...

Re: Any tips on strengthening the weak foot?

I always say to learn heel down - for both feet. This will strengthen and improve coordination in your ankles. The secret is too let the beater come off of the bass drum head, and splash the hi...

Re: Focusing on finger control or wrist control?

Like Jeff said - it all starts with the Freestroke. Find a teacher that really understands that concept and you’ll have a great foundation. As a beginner, also check out matched grip.

Re: I can't believe how much I sucke when it comes to soloing.

I think Dre is on the right track - think melodically - something simple. If you’re playing a solo, you’re creating something - composing on the spot. That’s working with the creative side of your...

Re: Letting go vs focusing

Interesting... I bet you could have played well with SRV! If you’re listening to the band first and yourself second - that’s how you get into the music. When drummers “let go” - they’re listening...
