Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

I tried to get Hudson to sell me some of those lugs, but he wouldnít do it. I eventually found someone who was experimenting with a similar system, but I wasnít very satisfied with it.

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

. When you say free-floating, do you mean Sleishman-style hardware, or just suspension mounts, or what?

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

They do cast brass snares, last I checked. If they can’t do an 8 or 9, I’d just settle for the other drums.

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

Cool. I’m thinking about getting a mixed-metal Oriollo kit, an 8x8 brass cast tom, 10, 13, and 16 copper toms, and an aluminum kick.

Re: Shell Bank

Depending on the total number of drums, you could probably do a decent shell bank from J-M for around 4K-ish. I bought the prototype kit they used to take to shows, itís 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 22....

Re: The Clock

Turning the metronome to 60 or even 50 bpm and trying to bury the click with claps, snare hits, etc. is really good for your time. I can bury the click consistently at 20 bpm, and stay fairly close...

Re: The Clock

Check my username. LOL

But for real. Thatís a great place to start, really slow push-pull 8th notes on the hi-hat.

Thereís something Iíve been playing with that involves doing 3 strokes in...

Re: PEARL STEEL SENSITONE VS PEARL ALUMINUM SENSITONE

6.5 if you go with aluminum, unless youíre always miked and you know your snare wonít get lost in the mix. 5Ē are obviously smaller and lighter, so thatís what Iíd go with as long as you donít need...

Re: PEARL STEEL SENSITONE VS PEARL ALUMINUM SENSITONE

Aluminum is a more versatile material, for sure. Lighter, too.

Re: Is made in the US really that much better?

American ingenuity produced spun fiberglass drums. But Oriollo, based in Serbia, is making the first spun copper and aluminum and steel kits. And Andy has made probably the best segmented wood kits...

Re: Turning Points?

Seeing Bob Becker play xylophone and snare drum summer of 1992 at Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro, NC. Iíve still never seen anyone with hands as good as his. Heís better than Buddy, Jim Chapin,...

Re: Manic Drums...

Pine can be pretty hard if it grew in an area that caused it to grow slowly, like a very cold/dry area, like a mountaintop or something. Otherwise itís just too soft to resonate well.

Re: The Official Oriollo Seamless Spun Copper Kit Review

Well sure. Maybe you could do an aluminum kick with copper toms, for people who need lighter drums, but who love the sound of those copper toms?

Re: The Official Oriollo Seamless Spun Copper Kit Review

I could see doing shorter/smaller toms, with thinner shells, like the Oriollo Bakar snares. Maybe some 1 mm shells in 10x8, 12x8, 14x9? Of course the kick should still be at least 2 mm, but you could...

Re: The Official Oriollo Seamless Spun Copper Kit Review

I definitely love my copper kit from Gladstone/Lang drums. Itís not spun, though. I canít wait to get home and listen to this on a decent (not my phone) speaker.

Re: What's actually going well for you in your world of music?

Linear exercises around the set, including doubles and paradiddle variations in both hands and both feet. Very slow, finding new patterns to challenge myself, paying very close attention to groove,...

Re: 36" kick?

Iím pretty sure the concert bass drum we had in college was a 36Ē. LOL It had calf heads on it, though.

Re: Next musical: "Little Shop Of Horrors"

Re: Play linear triplets like Matt Garstka - drum lesson

That’s nice, good feel on that. I like that you threw some doubles in there. I’ve just started toying around with mixing doubles and singles together into my linear triplet practice.

Re: Gear you could afford but never owned

Itís got a lot of flex due to the fact itís a hollow log, and also how thin the shell is next to the bearing edges. Itís very clear that they just copied the traditional taiko style drum construction...

Re: Your weirdist gig?

I once used vibe mallets to improvise on a large sheet-metal sculpture, along with 3 or 4 other percussionists. It was weird and a little lame. LOL
