Re: remembering a tune

As posted by moxman,”Guitar players dial up the right tempos effortlessly.. I think it's part muscle memory (the strumming) and part memory of the song in their head (lyrics and rythmn).”

Re: What's actually going well for you in your world of music?

After a minor(TIA) stroke 2 yrs. ago I decided to learn “matched” grip. It almost matches my ability to play trad of 45yrs.! My other reason for learning matched was to stave off my left hand’s...

Re: Drummer’s Place In Band

I have to agree up to a point: depending on the music being played, the drummer is support only or the drummer is so important the band can’t replace the drummer without serious musical changes. None...

Re: Stick moves horizontally instead of vertically

Can't say it enough: practice the vertical motion with the German grip, especially it you used to play traditional with the left hand-you have to keep at it.

Re: Your weirdist gig?

Played a women’s bowling league awards dinner. Lots of beer in the audience...when our power cut out(some bad cables) I was told by the band leader to “quick, play wipe out! The audience is about...

Re: Need help with memorizing songs and cymbal crashes

Try to think of the crashes as punctuation of the song, sometimes for the vocals, sometimes for the guitars’ parts and rhythms inherent to the music: crescendos or guitar “walk-ups” ending in with...

Re: Throne seat issue?

You might try just shifting your throne an inch or so to one side or the other or sitting slightly to the left(hhat side) or to the right. I’m always surprised by what small position changes can hurt!

Re: Can you be a good drummer with bad math skills?

Maybe the question should be: is math ability inherent in great drummers who read and or write music?

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

Make it shiny and full of chrome and drummers will buy it! Just kidding. Only some drummers will buy “it.”

Re: The Logical Order of Study

This is maybe a bit of strange advice but play to the Hendrix’ Experience and Axis albums. MMitchell has a great variety of styles and techniques applied to these songs that you can’t help but learn...

Re: What killed off Slingerland?

Oops, I meant Slingerland FT had the weird leg buttons, not Rogers. I got lost in the thread!

Re: What killed off Slingerland?

Speaking of Rogers hardware...did your old kit have the terrible, button control FT legs that over time wear out and make you constantly readjust them as the legs slide thru the mount?

Re: Weaker hand problem

Ghost notes are “drop the stick” notes, drop and drag sometimes and not something to slam. Even a weak hand does these easier than a dominant hand which usually hits with more power. Try dropping the...

Re: Getting better at drums

It will take practice to get to play “syncopated” kick rhythms. This is the old advice, I know, but true. If you feel the rhythms but can’t play them, you’re half way there! You still need to improve...

Re: Back to the basics

SO you have played all those basic beats and fills. Won't take much to refresh those skills, watch the current drummer, just find the music you"ll be playing for the church and review those beats and...
