Re: Shine Drums: Sizes?
toms seem pretty good, although I'd be leaning towards 13 & 16 or 14 & 18... 5" is a lot of spread between toms.
For the kick, I'd seriously like to suggest you consider a shallower kick;...

Re: JT Whitney Nesting Penguin Drums
Rob, who got booted from here a while back (fourstringdrums), just bought himself a set, and he posted them along with an ok soundfile over on ghostnote.
Interesting design, pretty clever. Rob's...

Re: Single ply drums
For all the other shit you have to get, I'd strongly recommend getting in contact with Eric Sooy at drumfoundry.com. They're the best for that kinda thang.
Man, they're gonna be some sweet tubs. ...

Re: Sleishman Total Suspension System Drums
Great drums, and Australian!
The best sounding kit I've ever had to pleasure to play/hear in person (not mic'd or through a pa) was a Sleishman. Made the DW Collectors and Starclassic maple next...

Re: Floor Tom Troubles
I honestly think that the best starting point for a drum is a coated ambassador over a clear ambassador. From there you can work out what changes in heads you need to get the sound you're after, be...

Re: Pro Workhorse Kits?
Or get a Tempus (tempusdrums.com) kit and not worry about scratches or even cases! Paul Mason sometimes beats his drums at shows with a raw piece of 2x4 to show how durable they are. That goes for...

Re: What would you change about a drum brand?
They don't make any. They rebadge the drums made by a small european company, whose product doesn't appear anywhere near the quality of most small/boutique builders like Unix, Metro, Brady, and JTP...

Re: What would you change about a drum brand?
Said patent: http://www.patentgenius.com/patent/7446250.html
It's so ridiculous that a company that's relatively young (compared to Ludwig, Gretsch, etc) has the balls to pay to have a patent put...

Oh, what a suprise... some of my comments got deleted.
For the record, they were that Pearl are the dodgiest guys in the business who make a living on stealing ideas from the small guys. Golden...

Re: Do you prefer wood or steel snares?
This is my "go to" snare.... to be honest I've been exclusively playing it since I got it. Nicest drum I've ever played, and has worked for performances in small carpeted rooms to pubs to loud halls...

Re: PDP platinum vs Mapex pro m
It's more like saying that you haven't liked martin scorsese's last few films, but you might go watch his next one in a year or two when it comes out. In 20 odd years DW has changed a lot, that's...

Re: PDP platinum vs Mapex pro m
I own a PDP, and as it stands will never purchase another product from them. As for DW, (ignoring the HUGE lugs) they are great looking drums that sound great and are well built. However, in...

buy a mapex tom off ebay to score yourself the lugs, then get a custom builder (eg someone at ghostnote.net) to finish a 6" keller shell so it matches. You're probably going to struggle to get a...

Hey Mike,
there's plenty of fantastic companies who DON'T frequent the boards there too, however it's a great way to communicate/throw ideas around with a HEAP of top quality builders.
Also, I...

If you want a custom kit built for you, rather then going to one of the larger companies (ie DW, Ayotte, etc), I strongly suggest you check out ghostnote.net
