Re: Is it unethical to buy drums made in China?

It's a valid question.

The west has no right to judge the pollution frankly, but there is the issue of how people are employed and treated. I'm not sure democratic processes/thinking would work...

Re: My crazy guitar player bought a brand new kit for me to use!

Wow, what a story.

I hope you showed your gratitude.

Re: How should a band practice?

Hey, I'm a bass player - we're not all like that.

Outside of the practice session, I would get together in a bar and discuss making the most of the practice session. The time between sessions can...

Re: My humble take on good drummers and OK drummers

I'm not sure the old adage is true.

I think the size of your kit does matter!

Re: Thoughts on fill placement

That's the thing. Have you ever heard ...

"Don't overplay."

"You're the drummer you need to lead."

"You should bring in your own personality."

"Follow the leader!"

Re: What I've been up to - workshop tour.

There are other shed essentials such as whisky, telly, radio or wi-fi.

Had a boss once who boasted about having 2 sheds.

After that we called him two-sheds.

Re: Thoughts on fill placement

Maybe fill and accent can be part of this discussion. I note that Stewart Copeland would often accent and sometime fill within bar 3 - I really like this and it was definitely part of his style and...

Re: Do You Play Another Instrument Besides Drums?

I've been playing bass for 36 years …

So that's my No 1 instrument and what I get hired for.

Drums is my No 2 instrument although it's catching up!

Re: Which Bassist would you hire?

Any of the Weather report crew ...

- Jaco Pastorius
- Miroslav Vitouš
- Alphonso Johnson
- Victor Bailey

- Linley Marthe (Zawinul)
- Christian McBride (Sting)

Re: Why Do Bands Have Two Drummers?

I think it universally detracts from the music. As a player you have to constantly keep a check on the other drummer rather than focussing on the music. You can't so easily take the music in a...

Re: Tama Silverstar Update

Good to see they're holding up.

I always marvel at the hardware, which I really like.

What heads are you using? Some of my resos are still originals and I was wondering if new resos made much...

Re: Something refreshingly different - gig report - video

I went to the London Jazz Festival but went to see Brad Mehldau.

I got to see Mark Guiliana and also Seb Rochford.

Drum nirvana

Re: Losing that second crash cymbal

I've only ever owned the minimum, ie 1 of everything (kick, snare, FT, Rack Tom, hats, crash and ride). I'm forever shifting it around London and thinking I must be mad and how much easier it is to...

Re: New! Official Guru In-Tense snare comparison video :)

Andy's contribution enriches this forum significantly. So I have no issue at all with Andy showing his products. It's that simple.

Re: Floor tom feet, resonance, etc.

As a matter of interest why do you need more resonance from your floor tom? They are typically overwhelming in terms of resonance and as a bass player they drive me nuts. When our drummer plays a...

I disagree with just about everything you say here. But that's cool. That's what it's all about! It's good to have different views.

Re: Am I a terrible drummer?

The couple of Beatles songs I've played have been fast (160 bpm) and they would be very difficult for a beginner. Normal players with 2-3 years do not have much control of dynamics and sound. I...

Re: Flattening toms?

Wow level with snare. I can see why you'd have them flat. My toms are mounted on a kick so they are anled 10 degrees or so towards me. If I try them flat - it's rim shot city!

Re: How to "own" the time and still follow others.

I think about this a lot. Maybe it's because I'm a bassist and a drummer. My bass skills exceed my drumming skills BTW.

For me, the difference between a good band and a great band is the...

Great review Jeff.

You may have said this before but what dimensions/drums did you go for?

As a complete aside, I had a custom bass made for me from Jeff Bordwell (Port Lauderdale, Florida). I...

Re: Group snare porn ;)

I asked this question in the wrong place but Andy, what tuning did you use on these snares? They also sounded wonderful from a distance and close up.

Re: The official London Drum Show thread. Who's coming - forum member arrangements!

Question for Andy:

All your snares sounded fab. In fact I could hear people trying them from quite a distance away. I was just wondering if you used a tune-bot and what tunings you were using?
