Re: Garageband: Separate Tracks!!!

Great! It sounds like you need to spend some more time getting familiar with the capabilities of your software and interface. Good luck with this project! :)

Re: Garageband: Separate Tracks!!!

I don't have any personal experience with Garageband or the Alesis interface, but they appear to be similar to all other multi-track recording software and basic USB interfaces. Yes, you can make...

Re: Microphone buzz/hiss

Thanks for stepping in to straighten me out. My earlier advice about lowering the preamp gain will only make the problem worse, as you mention.

Re: Microphone buzz/hiss

If you haven't yet, make you way over to the forum at www.gearslutz.com for info on recording gear, techniques, etc.

As you start down the path of recording, here's a few things to kep in mind......

Re: Microphone buzz/hiss

As far as your interface and (planned) mics go, you're pretty much scaping the lower end of the barrel for recording equipment quality. I understand that budget sometimes dictates our equipment, and...

Re: Microphone buzz/hiss

Get better mics than the C3s - really.

What are you using as an interface (AD conversion)?

Re: Set Lists

Absolutely. Women dancing is ALWAYS good for business - for the bar and the band.

Re: Set Lists

The approach my band is taking with covers is to make sure we do something different with them. Unless you can NAIL the original version, people get bored in a hurry with mediocre cover songs. If...

Re: What do YOU think makes a good drummer?

Take this from the point of view of a bass player (which I am, primarily)...

5% Speed - playing fast takes skill, and sounds good, but it is a very small part of what matters for a good drummer,...

Re: Rawness

I get it, and completely agree. It's all about serving the song appropriately, which (IMO) is a big part of being a skilled musician. There definintely are times where busy/complex/powerful is...

Re: Rawness

Are you familiar with Dawes?...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtxKFpJ39HM

It's not exactly "raw", but the playing is simple and well-executed. It's all about the song, not the playing.

Re: Rawness

Additionally, check out "Chulahoma". It's The Black Keys doing covers of Junior Kimbrough songs (some of his songs show up on their other albums, too). Junior Kimbrough was the single biggest...

Re: Upgrade drum kit for my son

Sounds like a PDP X7 kit might be a good compromise for your needs (budget) and his desires (hero's drums). PDP is a DW company.

I wish I'd spent time on this site before I bought my first...

Unwrapping PDPs

The vinyl wrap on my of bottom-of-the-barrel PDP drums is buckled and wrinkled in many places on each shell (apparently, the former owner allowed them to sit in the sun for an extended period).

Re: Is it late for me? (Drum starter)

Truth!

Getting competent enough to play in a band should be a short-term goal, not the finish line. More important than your starting age is your determination to continually work on improving...

Re: Former bassist, new to drumming.

Another bass player here. I've just started down the path to becoming a drummer, and the first thing I found was that I'm listening to the dummer in my band a lot more closely.

Re: Muscle memory

I'm also a new drummer and having the same issue. The only thing that is helping me is to slow things WAY down until I can get it right, then SLOWLY build my tempo back up. At this point in my...

Re: What brand of kit do you play?

Bottom-of-the-barrel PDP.

Why?
It was the only full kit on craigslist for $200 at the moment I was motivated to buy some drums.

Knowing my gear-buying habits, this is meerly a starting point...

Re: Squeezing the best tone from a dirt-cheap kit

This is also true for the instruments I'm familiar with. A cheap, well-setup guitar/bass in the hands of a skilled player is going to get the job done. For example, Eddie Van Halen is going to...

Damn. I was hoping to find something that isn't so appratent to a dumb bass/guitar player like me. ;)

Squeezing the best tone from a dirt-cheap kit

I'm a long-time bass and guitar player, and a total noob drummer. I picked up a cheap-@$$ used PDP kit recently that (even my noob ears can hear) sounds like crap. What can I do - aside from buying...
