Re: Jazz and Matched Grip

Glad someone mentioned him. He's a monster and one of my favorite jazz players.

I use matched to practice jazz because I have much more control. I try to make it sound right rather than worry...

Re: I accept defeat.

I suppose if you wanted to capture that sound live you wouldn't have much choice but to use overheads. Otherwise you'd probably end up being gated and it would sound like "splat" out front anyway.

Re: I accept defeat.

Not any more for me. I'm not in the same circuit as I used to be. It still happens but sometimes the club is small and it just isn't necessary beyond a bass drum mic'. And sometimes you just have to...

Re: S****y albums done by great bands..

That's absurd. If you had said after Love Gun I would understand if not agree. Rock And Roll Over is a very strong album and one of their best.

Re: Two floor toms....

Yeah, I used to set up that way a while back and found that the second floor tom often got ignored and that sucked 'cause it sounded great (an 18"). So I eventually went one up, one down and played...

Re: I accept defeat.

I don't use Pinstripes myself (or haven't in many years) but they have their place and can sound great. Anyone who likes JAW might think they're doing something wrong or their taste is invalid after...

Re: I accept defeat.

Not to mention that cymbals bleed into everything. Very few gigs I've played have overheads been used because they simply weren't necessary. There are deeply ingrained ideas espoused here which are...

Re: I accept defeat.

I agree. There seems to be a bias against tuning in the lower range around here and I don't get it. Tuning low is perfectly appropriate for many situations. I mentioned in another thread how I used...

Re: When playing one up and one down...

I played on another guy's kit a couple of months ago and he had the rack on the right. I had to switch it for our set 'cause that's just too weird for me. I asked him why he had it that way and he...

Re: Drums as an investment?

They can be an investment in the sense that having good gear that you use for making an income is a good idea. So they're worth "investing" in if you use them to make money. But in the value of the...

Re: Good snare drums after the packaged kit one

At the price range you're looking at, yes. Though if you want wood, I recommend the Ludwig Club Date SE snare. It's wrapped but you could strip it and oil it. Very reasonable price for a great...

Dude, it's a nice kit. Leave it and play it.

Re: Good snare drums after the packaged kit one

The Catalina Club isn't gonna be an improvement. Might I suggest a good quality steel snare? They are inexpensive and sound good for most rock styles. Don't forget to look at used stuff too.

Re: Post your youth pics here.

Not sure how old I was here but probably around 15 so 1987 or so. I was and still am a metalhead.

Re: Many cymbals yes, but many snares?

I have 5 snares and they all sound very different. Do I need to have 5 snares? Probably not but I know I'm covered for pretty much anything.

Re: Jazz Setup & Tom Sizes: 10/12 vs. 12/13

I used to be one of those who poo-pooed 12/13 but I am re-thinking that. It actually works just fine. 12 and 13 naturally tune about a tone apart which can sound a little weird. But just taking the...

Re: Do you own (or want to own) both acoustic and electric kits?

I'm on the fence on this one. I have a TD-6V with rubber pads and it's fun but I've been thinking of selling it and just going with mesh heads on acoustic. I actually did list it late last year but...

Re: So...where do you keep your spare sticks?

I've done that too but I more often use a stick holder on the left. It's one of those Gibraltar fabric ones. Stick bag on my floor tom on the right.

Nice. Interesting setup. What do you like about it over a more traditional setup?

Re: club date se

Well there you have it. It's a sad day. There's still a few on eBay and I'm sure some shops out there still have some in stock. Get 'em while you can, folks!

Re: club date se

I hope Ludwig keeps them around and offers new finishes in the future. Can you imagine that cherry outer ply with a nice satin finish? Would be sweet. Some new wraps would be cool too.
