Re: What songs do you really like the drumming on?

I remember when “Physical Presence” came out - great track - love the opening fill!

Re: Minor "Stick Control" Revision

It’s mazing that even today, we’re still talking about this book... Isn’t it going to be the 80th anniversary next year?

Re: Minor "Stick Control" Revision

Thanks for posting that article - I’m a big fan of Stick Control. I see the point your making, I used to have a warm-up where I took my favorite lines from the first 3 pages, and would play the...

Re: Samba

Some technical things to think about when playing Todd’s page...

Play it very slowly - 1/4 note=40. Play a groove or “solo” idea for 5 minutes straight, then move to the next one.
Keep your bass...

Re: Using Left Foot Hi-Hat, Does It Help Improve Time?

I also like to use my hi hat heel to keep time. Also keep in mind that different “beats” with your hi hat foot will give you different feeling grooves. If you tap up beats your groove will sound...

Re: Snare question: 8 vs 10 lug differences?

Historically 6 or 8 lug snares were found in the budget category, and the high end snares had 10.

After playing the usual 10-luggers for years, owning a Dunnett got me interested in 8 lug snares. ...

Re: Supra > Acro

I’ve always much preferred the Supra over the Acro. I like the extra “mass” on the Supra - I think the extra lugs and the chrome plating makes the drum heavier and gives a nice focused quality that...

Re: Strangely hard, easy sticking pattern

Quarter notes at 40BPM for 5 min - that’s a great approach to digging into any type of groove that you’re working on. Also keep in mind that when Chapin wrote Advanced Techniques, he was assuming...

Re: 13" vs 14" snare

13s can be nice - I got one years ago when the size was getting very popular. There’s a nice focus to them - but I still like 14s. Like porter said - there’s a fatness you can get out of a 14 that...

Re: How to inspire a new student in 45 minutes

If any of us think back and remember a great teacher at some point in our lives, whether it be a drum teacher, coach, school teacher, professor, etc. The thing that usually lingers in our minds is a...

Re: The side snare

I still have a 5x10 Grover maple snare that sounds great. I got this drum back in the late 90s when the side snare thing was more popular. It's great for that Steve Jordan vibe...

Re: Anyone prefer standard depth?

I tend to go for 5/5.5 depth snares. I've always preferred the 5x14 Supra over the 6.5. When I spec'd out my latest snare, I asked for 5.5... My steel Dunnett is a 6.5, but when I ordered it, I...

Re: looking for new metal snare.

The person that always comes first to mind for me, is Gregg Keplinger. I think he's done Bronze, but I know he does Steel, Brass, Copper and Black Iron. His drums are in the middle, price wise -...

Re: Click practice is great and all but..

Resist the reggae beat! It's hard to do at first, but really try and state the downbeat yourself - you are the authority, not the click. One trick is to play your hihat with slight accents on the...

Re: Click practice is great and all but..

When I really started shedding with the click, everyone was using drum machines and programming cowbell downbeats with shaker upbeats... That was the "cool" way to have consistent rhythm, with some...

Keith is great - I've seen him play a bunch of times around town. It's really cool to see him in a small club with players like Oz Noy and Wayne Krantz. The Oz Noy gig is fun because it's every...

Re: Do you use moeller for back beats?

For quieter dynamics, It's a Low Moeller stroke - there are many different heights - from just a tiny flick of your wrist, to completely over your head... It's great for pulling out a quick accent...

Re: Jazz ride pattern - looking for good advanced technique videos on YouTube

Steve smith has a great way to embrace the triplet feel under quarter notes in his "History of the US Beat" DVD.

Just remember - Ride cymbal: Walk the-dog, walk the-dog, walk the-dog, walk...

Re: Do you use moeller for back beats?

Dave is right!!
I definitely use Moeller with backbeats. It's a very natural motion, so you might want to address your grip, if the motion isn't feeling right. It looks like you're grip is thumb...
