Re: Negative Progress / Quitting

Oh, MAN! You just need to get your confidence up.

And I've BEEN THERE! I've thought about quitting more than once. There were a few times when I was absolutely certain that throwing away the...

Re: Roger Taylor

I'll tell you how great Roger Taylor is:

I'm not a fan of Queen. Nothing against them, but the concept always seemed too contrived for me.

Even so, Roger Taylor's drumming has always impressed...

Re: Tommy Ramone - major influence

I don't have a single-head kit photo to display. I just wanted to express my appreciation for Tommy's drumming and his vital role in creating one of my favorite all-time bands.

Thank you, Mr....

Re: Negative Progress / Quitting

Yeah, you could be right. I guess I was unsure of how objective the statement was: is the OP actually getting sloppy and uncoordinated, or does he just perceive himself to be getting sloppy and...

Re: Negative Progress / Quitting

THIS.

Hey, man, I've been there, and it's very frustrating: you struggle with things that used to come easily. You feel like you're regressing and you don't know why.

But what I came to realize...

Re: Not denting heads

Early on in my playing, I constantly broke sticks, dented heads, and cracked cymbals.

Now, it's rare that I dent or crack anything. Sticks still break, but they last several times longer than they...

Re: Your warm-up tips here!

This.

But I also try to get some kind of a warmup in before a gig - as I get older I realize it takes longer for these muscles to get loose, so having a head start before playing is advantageous....

Re: Another Band Drama Thread

I'd like to introduce another concept to this thread...'quality volume'.

Basically, a bad band playing at a quieter volume can often be perceived as 'louder' than a great band playing at a higher...

Re: Danny Seraphine

I certainly didn't put those words in your mouth. (Damn that 'Quote' feature!) Again: if criticism offends you, stay off the internet.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. So far,...

Re: Danny Seraphine

I replied multiple times because I received multiple questions regarding my initial statement...it's all well documented above. I'm not trying to influence anyone's opinion; rather, if I get a...

Re: Making Ends Meet Between Tours?

Man, this is good stuff.

Very lucky that you post on these forums. All no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is musings from a guy who's 'been there, done that' - and continues to do it! Lots of us have...

Re: Licking my wounds from sitting in tonight

Yes, yes and yes. Some of the worst drumming experiences in my life later turned out to be harbingers of some of my most creative and groovy playing periods. The fails prompted a serious look inward...

Re: How do I get out of the "drumming blues"?

I'm not embarrassed to say I often play for free drinks.

Of course, I'm not exactly PROUD to say that either...

Re: Danny Seraphine

Damn straight!

And yep, that's Slade on the 'Razor's Edge' and 'From Donington' live albums. I'm not so sure it's a coincidence that it wasn't long after the Donington album that Malcolm called...

Re: Charlie Watts

I'd have to disagree. You're obviously a big Charlie fan, as am I, and I think Charlie adds an unquantifiable quality to the Stones' groove that simply wouldn't be the same if another drummer...

Re: Danny Seraphine

As you say, funny; it's the exact opposite for me. Part of the reason I dread seeing a Hendrix cover band is because absolutely no one I've seen has been able to recapture what Mitch added to the...

Re: Danny Seraphine

Much appreciated.

I was certainly curious to see if anyone else on this forum shared my views on Seraphine. Looks like that's a big, fat 'NO!' But hey, I regularly read someone posting a...

Re: Danny Seraphine

Bingo.

Ward's obviously not as busy as the other gentlemen I mentioned, but for the 'monolithic metal' genre (which he helped create), he adds a lot of little flourishes that probably wouldn't...

Re: Danny Seraphine

'Old Days' is a more glaring example. '25 or 6 to 4' - meh, not as offensive, but it still sounds 'frilly' to me. One example that jumps to mind is Chicago's version of 'I'm a Man'. I'm a big fan of...

Re: Danny Seraphine

This is sure to be a popular post...

Frankly, I don't get it. I'm just not a fan of Danny Seraphine. I always found his playing overly busy and annoyingly showy. The needlessly-hyper bass drum...

Re: What's the best things about your playing?

I've got a good attitude.

I know. It sounds unimportant - maybe even self-effacing - but there's a reason the guys I play with want to continue playing with me, and I'm pretty sure it ain't my...

Re: Ghost Drummer for Kiss, Jimi, Alice Cooper etc

True, but more true today than in the past - when you heard Buddy Holly records, for all intents and purposes, that WAS live. When you hear Jerry Allison playing, you know you're only hearing Jerry...
