I noticed on several of my snare drums that the badge/vent hole are all located in the same location at 9 o'clock if the throw off is facing my belt buckle.

Perhaps for visual marketing if drum...

Yes! I've used a reverse white dot batter over a Diplomat snare side and it produced a great result on my 5x14 brass shell.

I picture what your describing as more of a Gladstone stroke. The idea of throwing down and pulling back up to the start position thus pulling the sound out with the stick.

I used a Paiste 2002 ride or a Zildjian 21" rock ride when I was with an 18 pc. band for three years. Listen to Ed Shaugnessy's cymbals you'll get the idea.
