Re: Playing Jazz Tips
It seems a thread like this comes along every few weeks.
I can't add much to the other recommendations other than maybe look into getting a teacher. Jazz is a little foreign to a lot of folks so...

Re: The Drum Case Thread
The Protection Racket is some really good stuff. I only have a cymbal bag and large soft gig case from them but the cymbal bag has tons of padding in it. I use it all the time for local gigs. I...

Re: George Lawrence Stone - Stick Control
I agree.
There are definitely more productive things we could do with our drumming practice than Stick Control for hours (or years). Sometimes, I'm almost overwhelmed with all that I want to get...

Re: drum workouts....
Normal fitness/strength training should be more than enough to play drums.
Playing drums isn't really about muscle development. It it was, Mr. Olympia would be the WFD every year.
In my...

Re: This is Harold Jones
Thanks for sharing, Bo.
I don't think Harold Jones gets nearly the attention he deserves. Seriously one of the best.

Re: Playing in church
Mine are usually provided by my church through CCLI.
However, here are a few of my resources since I like to write notes on my own chart before practice, if it's a new song.

Re: Jazz&Funk: Your Snare Pick
Ludwig Supraphonic. LM400
There's nothing that snare can't do...except sound like an LM402.
Wait...is it too late to change my answer?

Re: Playing in church
I play drums at my church and I always make drum charts. Not note for note really as we occasionally do our own slightly altered arrangement. But I do listen to the song and get a basic roadmap of...

I just did exactly this when I saw Clayton Cameron (another Ludwig guy...) last month playing with Molly RIngwald (Yeah, THAT Molly Ringwald.)
I sat about 3 feet from his kit and...

Re: Bass Drum Issue
It shouldn't matter what type of pedal you have. You can learn the how not to get that bass drum beater buzz.
I suggest checking out Matt Ritter's excellent DVD, "Unburying The Beater". In it,...

Personally, I've neer had any with the toms tuned higher. It must be the lower tom tunings where you get that sympathetic buzz.

Re: Following Larryace's lead
Definitely! You can do double so much easier with the tighter heads. Plus they do sound much better.
About a month ago, I recorded myself at a jazz gig, so I was already tuned pretty high which...

Re: Newbie Jazz Drummer practice routine help.
This is where the Alan Dawson book comes in handy. It shows you a lot of the ways to interpret Syncopation. It starts off simple and gets more complicated.
Since you asked, I assume you have a...
