Re: Painting a bass drum reso head?

"Holy Smoke" - Knowing some of the stuff I've pulled off in the last 56 years I wouldn't call myself holy. Pious, maybe, but not holy.

I'd think any exterior grade paint would work well. ...

Re: Drumming dreams

Mine is almost the same, but I'm in a red-walled studio with fringed lampshades, playing these naked-wood drums that are tuned to perfection. The owner - also the owner of a drum manufacturing...

Re: Toning down a ride cymbal

Try playing on different parts of the bow. I get less wash when I play closer to the bell, but it still has good stick definition.

Re: Here's an idea!

I was going to chime in on this, but found that somebody had already answered, and since my opinion is just that, figured I'd best leave well enough alone.

But, since we're on the subject, what...

Re: What was the first concert you went to????

Heart, the Dreamboat Annie tour at the Saginaw Civic Center (Saginaw, Michigan) in 1976. I was 17 - smack in the middle of that fuzzy period from 1974 to 1983.

Re: Hi-Hats: Tight or loose????

Ed-zackery! I use Teflon (anti-seize/plumber's) tape on the top hat nut so I don't have to jam it tight. Seldom if ever comes loose, but is always easy to remove. If you tear down often for gigs,...

Re: I'm back. Did you miss me?

No such thing as a cancer survivor, brother - you're a Cancer Conqueror! Congrats on beating the disease AND the treatments. ;-)

Metastatic prostate cancer in May 2006 - cancer free since August...

Re: Guy downstairs goes mental when practicing e-drums

Awww Gee...

Do we HAVE to revisit this tired old thread? Although not as bad as, "I'm building a home studio in the loo at my Mom's house and want to sound-proof it," it comes close.

Re: Wanting to join a marching band

At your age, you could apply for the US Army Fife and Drum Corps, but I think you have to play in time to exploding artillery shells and small arms fire. ;-)

Re: S****y albums done by great bands..

Uriah Heep's Wonderworld

It's got Gary Thain on bass, but that's about the only redeeming quality.

Re: The dream vs. reality.

I thought Shop #1 looked familiar - it's Roy Underhill's Woodwright's Shop.

Sort of resembles my woodshop - it's got a floor, walls, a ceiling ...

Re: OCD or normal jacking around?

I feel your pain. Every time I sit on the throne, things get tweaked a bit. Mostly the throne, snare or or hat stand, but occasionally my ride. Not much, but just a little.

I chalk it up to...

Re: Satellite Dish Anyone?

Ditto! We bought my wife's parent's property up north - came with the old-style 8 foot diameter round aluminum (aluminium?) dish. I recycled the mounting hardware, dug up the post and tossed the...

Re: Joe Cocker: The Only Singer To Make A Beatles Song Sound Even Better

If you've got 4 minutes, this is worth a watch. Try to listen to the singing and read the captions. You can always go back and watch Joe's performance.

Just priceless.

Re: What makes music classic, timeless?

Timeless? Classic?

Music that is universally admired or enjoyed regardless of who is enjoying or admiring the content.

It could be the music, the lyrics, the performers or some combination,...

Re: Kind of an odd question?

Strangely, I practice with my "boom box" AND headphones. I wiggle the headphones' 1/8 inch mini-stereo plug into the boom box jack - not all the way though - and get stereo output to both speakers...

Re: RIP Aker Bilk

Not just 'Acker Bilk," but "Mr. Acker Bilk."

Good memories. Mom and Dad had his albums when I was a kid. I'd bet that if I went spelunking in Dad's basement, those old albums would turn up.

Another here too. I originally purchased them as H&B bags are made in USA, only to find out these are made in China. One anomaly in the stitching on one of six bags I own - does not affect the...

Re: That moment.....when the band are 'on it'....

Maybe I'm mis-quoting, and maybe I really don't want to know, but I have to ask: did the crowd want more of your drumming or did they want you to disrobe?!?

I guess you had to be there to know...

Re: Advice on drum additions

+1 on what Kamak and James said.

Don't forget to experiment with tuning your mounted toms - you can cover a lot of territory with heads and tuning. After you play a while, you'll know how to...
