Jazz bass drum pedal setting

I find myself playing more jazz and I'm trying to "unbury the beater." I've been watching several Peter Erskine videos and he does it so effortlessly. I'm pretty sure I have my spring too tight,...

Re: Jasper shells Fibes drums

glad to hear that it doesn't make much difference one way or another. I know they sound great, and I'm fully happy with them. But my hunch is that since I bought them used, that they were made...

Jasper shells Fibes drums

I bought a used set of Fibes maple drums in 2005. I know that they stopped using Jasper shells in 2003. I *think* my set is old enough to be using Jasper shells, but does anybody know a way to...

Re: Pressure on left foot

Do I want the spring tighter or looser to make the pressure from my leg less?

Pressure on left foot

When you play the HH closed, do you just let the left foot lay naturally on the pedal, or do you put a little pressure on it. I find that if I put a little pressure and tension on it, the HH sounds...

Re: Falling forwards when playing heel up?

I think the trick on heel up playing is to not end the stroke with the heel up, but with the heel down. This promotes both relaxation and balance.

To flam or not flam

When you hit on the backbeat and hit the snare and some cymbal together, what do you people think of the importance of "flamming" the hit or not flamming it, and trying to hit the notes...

Age and Speed

I am a 60 year old drummer. I stopped playing for about 25 years, and picked up the drums again five years ago. I was taught as a kid by an excellent teacher, a guy with a masters in percussion from...

gadd transcriptions

I'd be interested in getting ten or twelve people together who would be interested in doing Gadd transcriptions as a group. I'm far less interested in solos than I am in grooves he plays behind...

Help! snare drum sweet spot narrowed

I put a new head on my snare drum, tuned it as far as I can tell the same as I had the old one tuned, but my sweet spot significantly narrowed. The head is a *little* different. Both Evans, I...

Re: Practice Blues ...

Play rudiments along with your favorite songs on your ipod. Make them musical. Analyze. Slow them down. Make them perfect. Get Tommy Igoe's dvd on hands.

Pat Petrillo dvd and book

I *love* watching the grooves that are posted on Drummerworld from Pat Petrillo. My question to those of you who have the dvd/book is, how is the book? I hate it when I get a good dvd and the...

Re: bass drum padding

That's how everything started. First, the problem is relatively minor, but definitely annoying. I just didn't have the complete control I wanted, particularly on fast doubles. I tried adjusting my...

Re: bass drum padding

But I'm still at the point that to get the feel I like, I sacrifice tone. There's got to be a way out of this. Using two evans mufflers is the best suggestion I've heard.

Re: bass drum padding

I have a full time job. I have a son in college to pay for, and private lessons for me is an indulgence I can't really afford. I have elderly care to pay for. I'm 59 years old. I'm writing a book...

Re: bass drum padding

Matt,

I'd love to be able to learn a new way to do things, but all I can say is I worked on the technique in your video for about two hours and really didn't get very far at all. I'm not saying...

bass drum padding

Here's my problem. I'm a heel up player and I bury the beater. I've done this so long, that it's just not going to change. The problem I have is this. The more padding I put in my bass drum, the...

Re: samba feet

Matt,

What are Skypes lessons? I'm assuming some sort of two way video/audio setup. What do I need on my end to make that work? How much do they cost.

On the other hand, I have an aunt-in-law...

Thanks so much for the feedback. I'm purchasing your dvd today. Where do you live? I'm in Massachusetts. Maybe an hour with you could change my life forever too.

Re: samba feet

Matt,

I looked at reviews of your dvd and I'm intrigued. First, I've always hated cam pedals (always felt a lag in them), and am pleased that there is a renaissance of sorts with direct drive...
