Re: Snare bearing damage, how affected is the sound?

I would say if you're not getting a rattling/buzzing thing going on after tuning - high - med & low then it should be alright to leave it the way it is. I'm only going by what a drum builder told me...

Re: New Gretsch 3 ply Broadkaster line

Maybe we should all be using scientific names when we talk about types of wood. That would certainly clear this up. Liguidambar styraciflua (American Sweet Gumwood)....doesn't sound too bad....and...

Re: New Gretsch 3 ply Broadkaster line

You're not understanding what I mean by bulky....maybe I should have said...the bass drum looks....and maybe is....top heavy when you have a large piece of hardware and a top on top of it. The other...

Re: New Gretsch 3 ply Broadkaster line

I agree.

I ordered my Custom USA Gretsch shellpack to include no tom mount or cymbal mounts on the bass drum as you can see here. I'm very happy I did that. Part of the reason though is that an...

Re: New Gretsch 3 ply Broadkaster line

It would be very difficult for most of us to tell the difference in most drum wood. If you were to take Maple or Birch....for example....and build two drums identical....same plys, same size, same...

Re: New Gretsch 3 ply Broadkaster line

Les - Poplar is a different wood species. American Gumwood is Liquidambar styraciflua. Poplar is Populus species lighter in colour than American Gumwood. Poplar is fast growning with a straight...

Re: New Gretsch 3 ply Broadkaster line

I'd like to see them offered in die-cast hoops as well. I have 302 hoops on my 50's 3ply Gretsch drums and they're pretty nice. They're a beefed up Stickchopper.

I also would have liked to see...

Re: looking for new metal snare.

I highly recommend the Ludwig Acrolite.

You can pick them up for under $150 on eBay - here's a 67 Acro that recently sold for under $150....

Re: Best way to acquire a vintage kit

Another way to get a Vintage-Like shellpack is to order it new from Gretsch. They will do a Vintage buildout for you.
They will put at least the following on your shellpack:
BASS DRUM:

Re: New to me Acrolite

A very nice drum.
Good that you know enough about the Acrolites to want to have one. I'm more of a Gretsch guy - just a personal preferrence - but I got the Acrolite bug years ago. They're one of...

An amazing kit. I have about $2400 into it and it's well worth that .....to me.

Here is is.
All Gretsch 40's shells...

Re: GRETSCH RENOWN MAPLE?

I have a Purewood kit (African Mahogany) and my snare is 5.5x14 10 lugs - pretty much no snare beds - and is one of my very best sounding snare drums. Sure...it's not Maple but most of the sound in a...

Re: Help Identifying a Gretsch Renown color

Ya - the claws on my Purewoods are different than these. The ones here look like the spare set that came with my 2011 Custom USA Gretsch kit (I ordered a vintage buildout and they put these on my bd...

Re: Hey Gretsch experts...

By the way - the Metal shelled Gretsch snare drum - the one you pictured here is a very nice drum - sensitive and very 'snary' a beauty.

The only Gretsch metal snare drum I have is a 5.5x14...

Re: Hey Gretsch experts...

Looks to be a Gretsch Full Range (Custom USA from Ridgeland) snare drum - 2001-2013. It should have a paper tag in it with model and serial number.
The 2014 price (MSRP) list for the Hammered...

Re: Hey Gretsch experts...

If you can post a photo of the drum and badge and if possible the paper tag inside I could tell you roughly when it was made. Some Renown drums were made with what they call the Square Badge....it...

Re: Question for Gretsch guys about a particular Renown set

I have the 2007 catalog (linked above) and I cut n' paisted this in case you missed it.
The drums in question are a Lacquer finish

Very well made drums - they have the same hardware as used on...

In my experience of playing drums off and on since the early 60's and collecting and restoring some since 2009 I have come to this conclussion about different wood shells:

If you were to take a...
