Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

LoL! Oh the horror.. priceless.

Les I don't know where you are getting this mis-information from, but your source is wrong. I can't imagine anyone coming to support your argument. I've never...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

It must have been on the interweb, so it must be true haha..

I've seen lot's of matched drummers with horrible posture .. so it must be because they are using matched grip :) Really.. one of the...

Re: Buddy Rich Playing Matched Grip!

Haha.. yes it's true - that IS an untrue blanket statement!

.. anyone that has poor posture does not get it from playing trad.. they get it because they have poor posture!

Also; although I play...

Re: What's your latest purchase?

.. a pair of barely used Paiste Signature Sound Edge 15" Hi-hats.

I have another pair of 15" Zildigan hats, but found they didn't have enough bite for a loud rock band.. better for blues and...

Tempus is awesome.

I was playing with one of my 4 bands, which practices in a small basement room - and the volume in this classic rock type band can sometimes build up.. to the point where the 13"x6" Black Panther...

Re: How do you cue your live tempos at the gig?

Yes.. whatever works for you.
Absolutely nothing wrong with using a device.. for practicing, rehearsals, or whatever.. if you're thrown into a gig and you aren't familiar with the tunes.. it can...

Re: Any "fun" grooves for practice pad?

That's a good one.. I play stuff like that all the time, often bare handed.. a great way to pass the time.

Sometimes it's like solving puzzles (which IS fun).. like triplet paraddiddles where the...

Re: Drum shops in NYC or San Fran

I went to Sam Ash's (relatively close to the Empire State building).. pretty good selection and new stuff to try out. As far as used stuff.. I didn't find any stores on the island except one in the...

Re: Do Youtube Drum Covers Influence What/How You Play?

Firstly - I never badmouth other drummers - and that drummer is definitely not bad - he's got skills and timing from what I saw (just the first half) - he could use some dynamics on that take but..

Re: Ever forgotten your hihat clutch?

Just remembered, my cymbal stand trick worked because I had my hat cymbals with me - and I never remove the clutch from the cymbal.. as it always goes in my cymbal bag (on the outside pouch).. so I...

Re: The best lesson ever..

Ah yes.. it was basically take a basic but cool rythmn pattern and play it over and over, but introduce variations along the way - either dynamic changes or variations on the pattern.. inversions of...

Re: The best lesson ever..

Yes.. it's hard to describe. The best way is to watch up close how a great drummer 'strokes' the drums.. the hands are key, but it's the combination of hands and feet as well.. and how it fits with...

The best lesson ever..

I was thinking the other day that the most important lesson I ever had (when I was starting out 35+ years ago) was from a fantastic, amazing drum teacher I was lucky enough to have.. he played in my...

Re: Acoustic Drums VS Electronic Drum Kits

+++1!
Really, if you want to learn how to play - you need to sort out the environment issue. Take lessons on real acoustic drums, practice quietly in your apartment on a pillow or bed..or practice...

Re: Ever forgotten your hihat clutch?

forgot my whole hihat stand once.. mcgivered a replacement by putting the cymbals on a cymbal stand and faked the foot splash with some hand dynamics.. not sure if anyone noticed - my foot was up and...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Finally saw it - twice! Very good performances and great plot. Sure you can easily poke a lot of holes in it - too many to count here - but a very entertaining movie. If they hadn't embellished it...

Re: The worst gig of my life

I can and play odd kit configurations all the time.. not that I enjoy it as much as my preferred setup.. but the challenge can be fun sometimes. The weirdest kit I ever played was on a rack setup.....

Re: Can you fix this tom?

Those are all great suggestions.. I've always suspected the shell, but maybe the hardware too.. haven't tried changing the hoops yet. Lot's to experiment with.. thanks for the ideas!

Can you fix this tom?

I'm stumped.. sometimes kits have one tom that's a clunker, and in my case I have an old Rogers kit that I'm bringing out of retirement, not top of the line, but still the kick and 2 out of 3 toms...

Re: How to politely and professionally quit

As mentioned.. don't burn bridges. eg. a really good bass player got a bad reputation for suddenly quitting bands by storming out over some disagreement... just packs up the equipment and leaves!...

Absolutely.. I know sometimes the tendency is to have a stern look especially if you're playing something complicated or if you're tired... but I try to remind my self to always look relaxed even if...

Re: What makes a pro kit?

I'm surprised by the answers here.. the question is what makes a Pro kit.. not Pro drummer.. there's a big difference in kit quality from entry level to top of the line... and it makes big difference...

Re: Tuning woes

Yes.. 'tin' is what you get if cranking the reso to an extreme tension. Similar to cranking the batter to an extreme.. then it's just 'dead'. I think most drummers use something between the medium...
