Re: How do YOU Tune?

In tbe past I have tuned to specific notes (originally using a piano, then using an app) but these days I play 4 piece kits and just tune by feel and ear - when the tension feels about right I go...

Re: Can’t hear my kick!

What worked for me, but not for everyone, was installing a kickport, along with tuning the batter head quite low. I can hear the kick clearly from my throne, and no longer need drum fill at gigs. ...

Re: Hi-z Lo-z

If you plug a bass or guitar directly into a low Z jack input, some of the signal feeds through the plug back into the pickups. Changing the preamp gain can change the tone, or make the volume...

Re: Let there be light!

At one of our regular gigs the stage is wide but very shallow - so I do set up front and centre with the other guys either side. Four of us in a row along the front of tne stage.

Re: The worst drum /cymbal purchase you ever made

K Custom Session Ride 18” - Apparently the Steve Gadd model.

Imported it from tne US a few years ago. Tried it for 3 or 4 gigs. Thick like a barbecue plate. Lifeless. I wanted an 18” ride I could...

Re: Buying/Tuning a Concert Snare Drum

Here’s a couple of examples by Pearl and Grover.

Of course, you can get a similar sound from a standard sized snare drum with thin heads. Puresound also make a concert snare wire with longer...

Re: Buying/Tuning a Concert Snare Drum

Concert snare drums generally have multi-strainers with a few types of cables and wires to suit different volume levels and tones. At the least they have cable snares instead of coiled wire.

Re: In ear monitor users - mic'ing question

If your IEM overhead is picking up too much stage sound, try a figure 8 mic or even a shotgun mic. One venue I play swaps between a Rode Nt3 (hypercardioid) an SE ribbon mic ( figure 8) and a Rode NG...

Re: Building a collection

I’d get a shell pack - a kit with a few toms and two different sized bass drums. Then I could play rock gigs on the big gear and quiet gigs on the small gear. I’d have one set of hardware, and one...

Re: I don't understand why people close mic

Close mic’ing boosts the bass (proximity effect) which has been the preferred tone for rock drums since the late sixties.

Obviously acoustic jazz and classical percussion is based on a more...

Re: No Pearl distributor for Australia? Frustrating.

By the way - the part is a TX-100, an extension tube that makes a snare stand taller. My son needs it for orchestra playing, but doesn’t want to buy another seperate snare stand.

Re: No Pearl distributor for Australia? Frustrating.

I’ve looked at several Aussie shops online, and they all say ‘available to order’ or ‘out of stock’. (My local shop is not an Allans/Billy Hyde - that one closed last year..)

The part costs $50...

No Pearl distributor for Australia? Frustrating.

A few weeks before Christmas I went to get a small hardware part and was told by the shop that they couldn’t get any stock for a month because the Pearl importer/distributor was changing.
So now...

Re: Wearing watches while drumming

Same! My eco-drive is also waterproof and stainless steel, so it’s heavy and bounces around when I play. Now I wear a thinner, lighter watch for gigs, and have no isssues. I need a watch because a...

She’s endorsed by Pearl drums and Taylor guitars, among others. Originally a drummer, now a multi-instrumentalist. She was at the Pearl booth at NAMM fir a bit. Worth checking her videis - performed...

One of the Aussie drummers at NAMM got a photo with Elise Truow! He’s in love.

When are you going to post a picture with her?

Re: What is the slowest BPM song you enjoy playing

I played Albatross by Fleetwood Mac on Friday. That’s pretty slow.

Last month we did ‘Crazy’ by Linda Ronstadt.

EDIT: Albatross is 66, Crazy is 75 BPM

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

Not entirely drum related, but a local 50’s band plays to backing tracks - you can hear saxes and a horn section playing, even though the band is just guitars, keyboard, drums. If you’re going to...

Re: Current drum trends you wish would go away

Really tall bass drums, with the rack tom mounted way off the the left.

I like the rack tom to be almost above the bass pedal, certainly near the centre of the drum, not away to the left where my...

Re: What makes....

A big factor is the instrumentation. Swing implies a big band of saxes, brass and rhythm, maybe a clarinet or singer.

Rock implies guitar, bass, drums + vocal.

A string quartet could play an...

Re: quieten the resonant snare drumhead

You could roll up a small towel and carefully place it under the drum, avoiding the wires.

Re: I suck at power ballads.

Loving this old thread. I filled in for a band a few weeks ago and had to play ‘You make me feel like a natural woman’ fkrthe first time. That was an exercise in making a very slow 3/4 sound good...

Re: Looking for Jazz Drum Set

For my school stage band we bought a Stage Custom in the 20, 10,12,14 configuration. The 20” bass suits shorter/younger students but still sounds big enough for the big band. We changed the heads to...
