Re: Difficulty with certain tempos

Totally. I think we all have tempos that we naturally gravitate towards whether it be some unspoken thing that's just built into us or it's muscle/aural memory. Just like a singer has spots in...

Re: Working at a music store

I agree with this as well. I don't want to discourage you, but I spent a summer working in a music store and I hated every second of it. It's my least favorite job I've ever had. I spent my days...

Re: HELP: about to get embarrassed

That would be great, but that choice is a luxury that not everyone has.

Re: HELP: about to get embarrassed

I couldn't disagree more (respectfully). These kind of gigs are a JOB; a way to make a living. I know some absolutely amazing musicians who are unreliable and/or don't present themselves well,...

Re: Practicing too much double bass?

Any double bass is too much double bass. Now get off my lawn! ;)

Re: What tempo to practice at?

Why, out of curiosity? I'm not sure I dig the idea of just worrying about the numbers on your metronome. Hopefully most, or all, of your practicing is a means to an end.

No, in my opinion. ...

Re: Fast memorization when improvising? - methods - tricks - shortcuts ?

^ Truth. You're gumming up the works by over-thinking it so much.

Re: Your band's original Music Videos - wanted

Here are two of me playing. I co-wrote these tunes with my wife, who is the pianist/singer. You are welcome to use them.

Re: Singing and playing?

Leaving the melodic/pitch element aside for a second I think we should all be able to sing anything we play. The pulse, subdivision and "melody" should all be things that we can express freely in...

Re: What is the boogaloo beat?

The link that Alex posted is textbook boogaloo.

It's that 1960s "Soul Jazz" sound. You hear it a lot in organ groups.

What really characterizes it is straight 8th notes, a backbeat on 2,...

Re: HELP: about to get embarrassed

Man, reading your post was like getting in a time machine. Juries, hotel gigs with professors, etc. Those were some of my first gigs too.

Don't regret taking the gig, and don't back out now. ...

Re: Problem with Drum Student

I didn't read all of the other responses, so someone might have covered this, but I would just say keep trying different things, and try to stay on her good side. If she really hates music and...

Re: Good musicianship.....

Bill Evans once said that if you just focus on serving the music and making it the absolute best it can be then the rest will come. He said if you practice in a closet to make the best music you can,...

What exactly is it you're looking for? You might have better luck here: https://www.kalango.com

They get good stuff and are easy to work with.

Re: THERE SHOULD BE A STICKY THREAD ON HEARING PROTECTION !

Everyone just do yourself a favor and spend a hundred bucks, give or take, for some custom molded earplugs. They don't muffle the sound like those foam earplugs do, they just bring the volume down. ...

Re: Elvin Jones solo in Monk's Dream - Unity by Larry Young

The book is called Beyond Bop Drumming and yes, there is a transcription in there.

Riley also has a little breakdown of some of the ideas here:...

Nailed it.

Definitely get a BandCamp page and facebook page.

Take or leave SoundCloud.

Don't bother with ReverbNation.

Re: Playing along to music

I think when you say preamp, you really mean audio interface.

You can't just plug a microphone into your Mac. It won't work. (Unless of course it has an audio interface built in, like the Zoom...

Re: Cool Metronome Trick

I do like to keep a real metronome (or two!) hanging around, but you're right, it's terribly convenient to have one on your phone.

Pro Metronome is a perfectly good, bare bones, free metronome...

Re: Systematic approach to advanced independence?

There are some great drummers out there who can't read music, but for the most part I'm going to have to agree with Todd and Brent.

I suppose you could develop your own system wherein you just...

Re: Playing along to music

That will work great.

It doesn't even have to be a drum specific mic. If you're on a real budget one SM-57 or 58 properly placed will sound absolutely fine.

If you've got a little more cash to...

Re: Cheap vs expensive kits

A cheap kit can be made to sound good, but there is most certainly a difference in sound, durability and aesthetics.

Cheaper kits are often made from (surprise) cheaper wood. Bearing edges are...
