Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

OK, just saw it, some thoughts:

The main characters technique is really bad, and any drummer worth his/her salt can see that (move your damn wrists!). However, I believe he played like that...

Re: Yamaha drum kit, need advice.

+1 You can get a better kit in better used condition for 400-500, those aren't worth it.

Re: Pork Pie Snares?

Yeah Pork Pie is not that obscure. They're a small company but make great drums, be it custom and mass produced. I have a 13x7 Little Squealer which I think sounds much better than you'd expect for a...

Re: Ever shown up to play with a new musician and realized it was a bad fit immediately?

No horror stories, but I've played with plenty of guys who clearly aren't into playing music. They own an instrument and know a song or two, but there's no energy or life in their playing, which...

Re: New Tama StarClassic Bubinga setup

I've always wanted to try a Starclassic bubinga, I've heard nothing but good things about them. That's one classy kit.

Re: Playing for the song, but still leaving a bit of "yourself" on the track.

Generally, yes, the drummer should leave a bit of themselves in the track. Unless, kinda like Bermuda said, the drummer is paid not to. Music needs that kind of creativity to keep it interesting and...

Re: Sold my stage customs, looking for mid range maple kit

If you want shallow toms, take a look at the Tama Hyperdrive kits. They're birch, not maple, but can be found around the same price as the 2005 and Meridian maple. Plus, it's a six piece.

Re: 2015 RRHOF inductees. Congrats Ringo!

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: where there's no such thing as prog or heavy metal, and Green Day is considered "influential."

Re: Who uses Moongel?

I keep one on the edge on my snare, so it just gives me a tiny bit of dampening. It got rid of a few unwanted overtones and lets the woodiness take over. That moongel never comes off.

Re: Yahoo.com 10 legendary rock drummers..

I've seen worst lists. It's just well known, influential rock drummers. At least there's no Travis Barker, Joey Jordison, and so on.

Oh boy, 666 posts!

Re: Pulled the trigger on a set of Gretsch New Classics!

You'll find another good deal at another point in time. No worries, man. A happy wife is a happy life.

Re: Worst song ever

I'm gonna lump a lot of songs together: I hate cover songs used in commercials that never ever sound anywhere near as good as the original. "Yesterday, all my troubles seemed so far AwayeeyayeeyaAAA"...

Re: A new movie called Whiplash

I've been looking forward to this for a while. It's getting good and reviews and who doesn't love JK Simmons?

Re: What songs do you really like the drumming on?

King Crimson stuff, like Starless and Epitaph. I get so it into the groove that I end up playing harder and more emotional than when I play super heavy music. Cult of Luna and Isis are the only other...

Re: 13" vs 14" snare

I prefer 13" snares because I don't have to spread my legs as far to play double bass. There's a bit of a difference, but it's no big deal. Like the difference between a 12" and 13" tom. It all comes...

Re: How big of a difference do drum heads make?

You will see a difference. With those Emperors on top and Ambassadors on bottom you'll get much better sound out of that kit. You might not see it immediately, but as you get better at tuning from...

Re: Modern Metal songs with the "best" Drums

Atheist and Gorguts deserve a shout out. Their classic albums were ahead of their time and their reunion albums blow other bands out of the water. Voivod too, even tho it is less complex, it serves...

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

I was just watching some footage of Meshuggah (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tD6nG2Debc)playing live and it reminded me of this thread. I see five dudes on working their butts off on stage...

Re: Completely out of touch old fart irrelevant opinion - but,

Electronic music doesn't impress me unless it's made by people actually playing instruments. I'd go see Massive Attack live because it's a group composed of musicians who've honed their craft instead...

Yo I love J.K. Simmons. Didn't realize he was still working. Thanks for the heads up, this might be worth looking into.

Re: Drummers who don't use cymbal stoppers

Small cymbals fly all around for me too, but never off the stand! I don't use wingnuts or felt on my ride anymore, tho. It's easier to hit the bell. Everything else is lightly tightened down, so I...

Re: Self taught drummer.. how do I take my drumming to the next level

The best way to do this: get a teacher. I know it's intimidating, but you will cut down the time it takes you to learn something by yourself by a huge margin. At this point, it seems you're already...

Re: Problems with double bass groove(s)

Try slowing down and starting over with your double bass work, only now incorporate your hands. Find something more comfortable and slower than 120 and go from there. It takes a while, I'm still not...

Re: Always sounding bad when practicing

No! Don't quit! Keep working at it. Tell your brother he's an idiot who should support you, not bring you down. Even the greatest drummers sounded "bad" at some point in their lives. You don't hear...
