Re: Why not just PLAY drums...

There's some things only drummers can really appreciate and we all have a shared experience. I've learned uncountable things about music and drumming on this and other forums I've been on, that have...

Re: Pearls of Wisdom from Dave Grohl

That is a fair point. Liking your own voice and expressing yourself fully is an important part of playing any instrument, maybe the most important. But that takes confidence, hard work, and getting a...

Re: How to develop touch and tone on the drumset?

I think a lot of it is getting your bearings on the kit and finding what works, and what doesn't. When I started 16.5 years ago I was really frustrated with my bass drum tone. Why didn't it sound...

Re: Pearls of Wisdom from Dave Grohl

I will preface this by saying that I'm a huge fan of Dave's playing with Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures, QOTSA, Foo Fighters, Probot, and others. I also admire greatly the fact that he was able to...

Re: Drumming: the spiritual side

One of the things that I love about live music is what I call the "infinite positive feedback loop". If you have an audience that digs what you do, they cheer, they get loud, they dance to what you...

Re: Am I allergic to "2-down"?

One up, 2-down has never worked for me. I find that I get too caught up in going to the second floor tom, which seems like an unnatural position for me, away from the hats, rack tom, 1st floor, ride,...

Re: What is your focus, Chops or Groove

My focus is flow. I was in one band where it was mostly acoustic/folk, and the drums were supposed to stay out of the way. In most of the music I play (funk/rock/metal, some electronic inspired and...

Re: ...for the jazz cats ...

I'm wondering if you jazz cats could give me some recommendations. :) My favorite jazz albums of all time are A Love Supreme by Coltrane and Empyrean Isles by Herbie Hancock. I love 1960's jazz of...

Re: Dave Grohl replaces Joey Castillo for the upcoming Queens of the Stone Age record

I never really got that- none of the drum sounds on any of the Queens records sounded that great to me. I can understand from a perspective of being able to mix everything separately and getting more...

Re: Best purchases you've made for drums.

A hockey bag for hardware. I can take my four piece, 3 cymbal kit in an out of venues, even with stairs, in 5 minutes tops. Takes a huge pain out of load in/tear down and makes the worst part of...

Re: Dave Grohl replaces Joey Castillo for the upcoming Queens of the Stone Age record

The previous album,Songs For The Deaf, with Dave was one of their best albums and had a lot of kick ass drumming that surprised a lot of people. Really looking forward to this.

Re: Emmanuelle Caplette's new kit and a Toto cover

I've never seen a drummer play with such joy. Every little cymbal splash and fill she looks like she's having a ball when she smiles, almost a childlike enthusiasm. Physical beauty aside, she's...

Re: Your drumming "thing"?

Syncopated beats with lots of grace notes between the bass and snare with steady eighth notes on the hi-hats and barks. Also, big tribal grooves on the toms and flams.

Funkiest Drummers Ever?

I'm a big fan of funk. Something about the groove, the way it features the rhythm section with a great feel that makes you want to move. When I was younger, I was really into heavy metal and really...

Re: Is 'My Wave' (by Soundgarden) in 5/4 time?

Matt Cameron is one of the all time rock greats. He grooves through odd times effortlessly, and makes it all flow. Superunknown and Badmotorfinger are two of my favorite rock albums.

Re: Thought's on double kick

Honestly, I love my hi-hat way too much to play double kick. I mostly play rock and funk, and love hi-hat barks, as well as keeping time with the hats with quarters/eighths during fills. Just the...

Re: Playing for fun, what do you do?

Little grace notes on the snare so quiet they are barely there interspersed with the bigger hits.

Re: Playing for fun, what do you do?

When I play for fun, I like to see how many ideas I can come up between the hi-hats, snare, and bass drum mostly. Also, tribal tom beats and fill ideas.

I don't get much opportunity to play...

Re: Beater talk...

The stock DW beaters are powerful as hell and well balanced, agreed. The Pearl Quad Beaters are decent too. Right now the DW is all I need because I love the feel and sound.

Re: After decades, I'm letting go of the 5x14 size

I used a 6.5x14 Chrome Over Brass Pork Pie for about five years, and recently (last six months) switched to a 5.5x14 Steel Pearl Sensitone. I love the increased articulation and love the tone. ring,...

Re: Amazing Duos

Holy crap, that is some vicious noise. Love the guitar playing and drumming! Thanks for the recommendation. Their 2012 album is amazing.

Re: One Rack Tom vs. Multiple Rack Toms

I am a big fan of the look, feel, and ergonomics of the One up, One down. Two up one down messes up the ride position, and one up two down I find I have to twist to reach that second FT.

Re: Spaces = power.

That Steve Jordan video is incredible. It's crazy how much great players can pull out of such small kits. Love his approach.

Not really nerves before or during. For me, I just want to get up there and play! I get excited, love showing people what I can do on the drums, and have been a natural at live performance since I...
