Re: Ever look back at videos of yourself playing and cringe?

I'm a lot more comfortable watching vids of myself than listening to audio-only playback. I'd have it the other way around it I could pick. Oh well.

Re: HELP, permanent beastmode

Sounds like you were enjoying more of a gravity assist, and not working as hard as your dad was. But at the time of impact, it's the velocity that matters (or momentum, if you prefer), and not so...

Re: HELP, permanent beastmode

It's not how big you are; it's big muscles vs. small muscles. Both need to be developed to achieve dynamic range. Sounds to me like you're skewed pretty hard toward to big muscle group.

Re: Are E-kits only good for practicing at home?

There is a visceral and primal response to drums and drumming that interacts with a tiny clump of cells located somewhere in the oldest part of the brain. As refined as we like to think we are,...

Re: Meytal Cohen? She plays, right?

Nancy - that was an awesome post! Situational insanity? Ha - consider that stolen!

I think MC is taking the vapid route. I suppose she can "play", but it hardly matters if she can't be bothered to...

Re: joyful noise owners?

I bought one (TKO Brass 6.5x14) about two years ago based on a video demo from the same drumshop, but sold it after a few months of intense frustration with it.

They are very well-made drums with...

Re: Carmine Appice Lobbies For Led Zeppelin Drum Spot

Okay, so I watched that vid. I've never been a huge Carmine fan, and yeah, he wiped out in a few spots, but I think he came as close as I've seen in almost anyone in capturing Bonham's vibe. Also...

Re: ALBUMS THAT HAD AN LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR DRUMMING

Indeed.

When I first heard Billy Idol's follow-up to Rebel Yell (Whiplash Smile) I instantly fell in love with it and played it to death. It didn't do nearly as well commercially as its...

Re: Nuggets of hard won wisdom

Yes! Good one, Larry. When you're on a multi-band bill and there's another drummer waiting to set up his kit right after you, PLEASE, in the name of all that is righteous, don't start taking all your...

Re: 16th notes on single kick pedal

Never heard of him, but I wouldn't freak out too much on just the idea of 16ths on a single pedal because 1) if the tempo is slow enough, they're not impossible to string together, and 2) even if you...

Re: So you're going to a band audition...

I just went through the process of auditioning for a band. It took a couple of weeks and three different practices with them before finding out yesterday that I was in.

They first sent a link,...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

Um, you guys know this wasn't a documentary, right? ;)

Haha, j/k. Speaking of JK, that guy's pretty great. I liked the flick well enough.

But when I got home, and feeling quite inspired, I...

Re: ALBUMS THAT HAD AN LASTING IMPACT ON YOUR DRUMMING

Moving Pictures - Rush (cool to see this one on so many others' lists, too)
Spring Session M - Missing Persons
Discipline - King Crimson
Joe's Garage - Frank Zappa
Free Fall - Dixie Dregs...

Re: Drumming as Art

I love this idea! In fact, it's practically the only way I practice drums anymore (time constraints and all). Bonus if there isn't already a drum track (Adele's 'Turning Tables' comes to mind). A lot...

Re: Drumming as Art

For me it comes down to transparency.

Vinnie is capable of being so completely transparent you can't tell it's him, and when he wants to shake that aspect you'll know because he'll blast you in...

My brain is definitely most fresh early in the morning so it's perfect for getting some music time in.

Re: Relighting my fire

If you can sorta play, you're good enough to start playing with others.

The biggest problem I see (with a lot of players) is this idea that you have to be at least *this* good before you put...

Re: It's hard to start a band, when you're a Drummer

Actually, some of the best writers I've ever met have been mediocre as players, and in some cases just awful. But it makes sense if you think about it; if you're main goal is to just conjure up...

Re: Anyone recognize this set?

Appears to have two 12" toms too. Weird.

Not much to work with on that one, IMO. I'd pass.

Re: Bass drum 16th's: The "a 3" vs. "3 e"

Two words: Immigrant Song.

That one will whip into shape 16th pairs from both sides in a hurry, tho there is one substitution - replace the ghost stroke on the snare on the last 16th of 4 with a...

Re: Yahoo.com 10 legendary rock drummers..

I caught that too, I mean, are you frikken kidding me? You'd be hard pressed to find an example of his playing that has *more* subtlety than Fool In The Rain.

But whaddaya gonna do? It's just one...

Re: Yahoo.com 10 legendary rock drummers..

BUT:...Awesome! Haha! Sorry Ian, couldn't resist :)

He's such a badass all-around musician that my taste for his vocals (a lot of which I really like) can have no bearing on the matter.

Re: Where's the best place to find a drummer for my band?

I've had really good luck with placing and responding to ads. One thing I've noticed with ads is that you have to be mindful of how you write them. For example, if you write one out of frustration or...
