Re: Considering my “retirement” kit

Keystone X.
Loud, short note. Big open Ludwig sound without being as boomy as the Classic maples and not as tempered like the Legacy.

Beautiful drums that shouldn't be overlooked.

I think...

Re: Favorite Drummer

I have a hard time separating who I like to hear from who I like to watch.
when both factors are in play, a quick thought would be it's probably Papa Jo, Moonie, Discenzo, Coleman and Purdie.

Re: Decided to try this new look!

I don't care for the look.
I looked back at a picture of your set without the wood hoops and I like the way the chrome and gold blend together.
Those drums have nicely shaped lugs. The wood hoops...

Re: Stolen Gear

Bluetooth tracker.

They work great in a city like NY, where you could possibly catch the thief in the act.

Hide them in the cases.

Here's Hollywood Jim's thread with a snare like that.

Re: Dented Shell

Those are not dropped or hammered or damaged.
That's how they made snare beds on metal drums in the past. It's crimped.

Hollywood Jim has a snare like that.

Re: Musician vs Artist

Baseball is not a sport, it's a game. The players are not athletes, they chew tobacco and stand in a field.

But when someone is really so good at what they do, they give the impression of being at...

Re: The 16x14 floor tom

I have a 16x17 deep floor tom.
They aren't harder to tune when deeper.
It depends on the drum as to how difficult it is to tune.

Here's a 14x15" extra deep floor tom. I don't hear it missing any...

Re: Gone Too Soon

Thank you for the info, John.

I hope the rhythm is beautiful where Mitch is now.

Re: Drum gear gimmicks that didn't really catch on

I'm really put off by the laces on those shoes.
Among other things about them.

Re: Ever bought a recording just because it featured the kind of drums you have?

I bought a Jack Dejohnette CD because he played Sonorlites on it, but also because he's a great drummer.

I wouldn't buy a recording just because of the drums model.

Re: Did recording yourself make you a better player, and how?

I was using a Zoom q2 camera for a while, but the batteries were being sucked up way too fast.

One of the best things I did was to buy a Gopro with a powered battery adapter.
I can set the camera...

Re: More on this Gasket Business

Maybe the easiest way to find out what the difference is on a wood drum would be to compare two drums with the exact same specs but one with gaskets.
The only drums that come to mind are the Sonor...

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

Sure, we can find great pop songs from the 60s and the 2010s.

There's always been good music if you look for it.

Tin Pan Alley cranked out all sorts of goofy tunes by a bunch of up-doo girls...

Re: Why Modern Pop Music Is So Awful To Some!!!

I like to think the type of music I prefer has a conversation built into the performance.

The musicians are telling their story in a conversational performance with the other musicians.

I haven’t heard the video yet, but that’s sort of how I feel all the time.

Re: How did they tune in the 17th century

My guess is back in the 1600s or earlier, they simply tuned by ear.
People were very smart about music back then, not like now, where we have musical oafs running things.
They spent all their...

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

There seems to be an assumption that drums are best considered in regards to what they sound like with everyone else playing on top of them and with them amplified under mics in a club or other venue...

Re: The needless debate over drum construction and the misguided search for undo drum resonance

For me, drums can be a very strange experience.

No matter how well they are made, they can sound odd and dissonant because of their indefinite pitch.

When a drum is setup for projecting its...

I bet there's a bigger difference in the different models that the people in...

Re: Gretsch round badge

I think you would regret not having the 20.

Old Sonors are my love.
The new Vintage series drums are the classiest looking drums I can think of

I'm not really a fan of full roundover edges,...
