Re: New (used) Drums - Pearl Vision

I can see the pic.

They look great! I love natural finishes.

Re: Snare Drum Comparisons

Well, those both sound great!

I'm surprised that the 10-lug drum sounds a little more open and has more spread compared to the 8-lug. I suppose it is called a dry aluminum snare drum after all......

Re: Concert style tom's

I doubt we'll go back to the days where they're standard catalog items but I'm sure they'd make them as a special order.

Re: Looking for Jazz Drum Set

I agree that standard sizes are going to be your best bet. 22" bass drum with either a 12" and 16" or 10", 12", 16" tom toms. It's easier to get heads in those sizes and the kit itself will be more...

Re: A Comparison of Tama 15" Snare Drums

Thanks for taking the time to do this!

I really love the meaty "thwack!" the Aronoff snare has. There's something about the tone of black nickel over brass shell snares that just sound right to...

Re: Struggles of Short Drummer and 5-Piece with Offset Toms

I'd invest in a couple of cymbal stands. It's an awful lot to ask of a stand to fly two toms, a splash and two crashes.

One, it's really negatively affecting crash placement, and two, it forces...

Re: Struggles of Short Drummer and 5-Piece with Offset Toms

A lot of good advice so far, and while I'm not short I have some ideas.

Definitely lose the lift on the bass drum.

Angle the toms more. That will make them easier to get to.

Raising...

Re: Tuning drums with odd number of lugs

I just recently joined the odd-numbered lug club, with a 5-lug 10" tom tom.

I normally tune with two keys at opposite lugs but that doesn't work well on odd-numbered lug drums since there aren't...

Re: About to buy a Gretsch Catalina Club kit...

I've heard both the Catalina bop and Yamaha Stage Custom bop played in a jazz context several times and I thought they both sounded fine. I tend to avoid 5-lug drums and love Yamaha hardware, but I...

Re: What's The Best Metal Snare Drum Under $200? - Video

I've played an older Stage Custom steel snare and it was a fantastic drum.

I also owned an older (black nickel) Tama Rockstar snare. Also great.

And I've owned a 14x8" Supralite and think that...

Re: First time with drum wraps questions

I've never bought any wrap from Precision Drum (other than some bass hoop inlays) but I've had them do several bearing edge jobs and a shell cut-down job and they've always been fast, professional,...

Re: New for Ludwig in 2019?

Those 4-ply Super Classic shells are really something special...

I guess they fell victim to the "all maple all the time" trend that swept through the industry but I think (and the continued...

Re: Can't take PDP seriously somehow

I agree that Pacific wasn't doing any of DW's funky ply-layups, but the LX and CX series did use the same maple as DW. At the time Pacific was in Mexico the veneers were shipped directly from the DW...

Re: Can't take PDP seriously somehow

My Pacific kit was from the early 2000s and the all of the stands (every. single. one.) stripped out.

All of the shell hardware and things like tom mount/spurs/etc were all fine. I still use...

Re: Any ideas on aging, putting patina on chrome?

Chrome is so widely used because it doesn't patina. I agree the rims in the above photo have some kind of finish applied to them. Problem is, it will eventually chip off, exposing bright and shiny...

Re: Just Back From a Ludwig Factory Tour... Any Questions?

I think they went back to brass in the mid 90s. The bronze BB's were from a pretty short time period, which is why they're so rare now.

Ludwig didn't introduce bronze shells until after Selmer...

Re: Just Back From a Ludwig Factory Tour... Any Questions?

The 70s Black Beauties were brass. The late 80s-early 90s BB's were bronze.

Re: Just Back From a Ludwig Factory Tour... Any Questions?

Cool info! A Supralite with a funky finish could be a nice cheaper counterpoint to the patina finishes they're doing on the brass/bronze/copper Supraphonics.

I know they are always tinkering;...

Re: Can't take PDP seriously somehow

Absolutely! Those early kits really broke through because they were offering a lot of pro level features just a little over the price of an entry level kit. At the time they offered a five-piece...

What's the story behind that blood-red Supra with the brass hardware?

Re: Gary O'Toole departs Steve Hackett band

I've seen Steve play several times over the years and Gary's drumming and singing was always amazing. I'm really sad to hear he's leaving.

Re: Pearl sensitone bronze snare drum

I had an older version with tube lugs and straight hoops. Fantastic drum in looks, sound, and build quality.

Re: Pearl brass Sensitone video!

Sounds great! That medium tuning is just about where I have my brass snare tuned. I love how black brass snares can sound so crisp and articulate but with a ton of depth and body too.

Re: Hi guys. I cant tune

I agree. I wonder if it is an issue with truly not being able to tune, or just a false expectation of what a real drum should sound like.

Drums are loud and messy in real life. That perfect,...

Amazing kit, and I especially love the finish.
