Re: When to do Free Gigs and Paid Gigs

Big +1 for this, though for me, #3 is a distant third. I've known too many people who got hung up on the money angle to the point where it seemed like their only driver. Even if my band gets paid...

Re: Sloppy fills

I absolutely agree with this. Thing is that Moon was practicing fills, and practically all the time. Obviously he wasn't deliberately mapping them out, more that he was putting into practice the bits...

Re: Sloppy fills

In order to play fills that work, you have to practice them. I see a lot of drummers who can hold down the fort with adequate time, but since they see themselves as just time-keepers, their ability...

Re: The order of things....

I was in the same position when I started and what I did was not replace things until I had most things added that I wanted. There's more than one school of thought on this. Some will keep their kit...

Re: "Recording Heavy Drums" tutorial by Glenn Fricker

I think he's grossly overstepping his bounds and losing sight of the bigger picture.

First trick to getting a lousy drum performance (and lousy band recording as a result) is making sure the...

Re: If you were sitting behind my kit.

I'd get an 18" crash. K Dark medium-thin or thin would fit in well.

Re: My floor tom may be out of round.

I took delivery of a new Classic maple in '95 and the 13" was waaay out of round on the reso side. First thing I did getting it home was do a head change, but it took a mallet to get that frikkin'...

Re: CAN I LEARN ON PRACTICE PADS

Yep, all good with the practice pads. If you don't have a kit and pads are what you got, then rock that sh!t!

I started with two and that was basically my kit for about the first year until I...

Re: New Pearl masters MCX = Horrible!

I bought a new set of maple Tama Starclassics that were a special order in my favorite sizes and color of choice back in '97 or '98. I ordered them with the optional rerings based on the product lit...

Re: If you were sitting behind my kit.

Cymbals if it were me. Most snares can be dialed in nice, and with your Supralite, I have to assume it's holding up its end. I could play on one exclusively and be happy.

But cymbals are such an...

Re: snare shells - telling brass from aluminium?

I wouldn't buy a Supra listed on a CL ad as a COB without being able to verify it somehow - either by seeing some shavings or comparing its weight to an otherwise identical COA.

Too many people...

Re: Rim shots- how to practice precision?

It's about maintaining a reference point, and for me what works is having the snare height/angle such that rimshots happen effortlessly when my knuckles just graze my thigh. Without that bit of...

Re: How to politely and professionally quit

Wait, so you're saying instead of telling them, "You guys are jackasses, I quit!", what I should say is, "I'm feeling a lot of hate right now, I quit."?

Geez, that sounds really hard. lol

Re: How to politely and professionally quit

Why half-ass it? Go for the rage quit! Haha!

I'm in two bands at the moment and need to quit one of them quickly cos the dudes are driving me nuts, and not in a good way. So I'm in the same boat...

Re: What was the first concert you went to????

I wish I could say mine was the Beatles but sadly a bit before my time.

Mine was Rush in '81 - Moving Pictures. I can't complain about that too much.

Go Neil!

Re: Do you plan your fills?

As a youngin' upstart back in the '80s, I really liked the way Neil Peart had all his fills so mapped out. I don't do this myself but appreciate that he did.

What I do as a nod to what he did is...

Re: What Metaphors Do You Use in Your Playing?

I like the idea of the band flowing around the pulse and riding the time as surfing a wave.

Re: How about a 22x13" ?

Man, that's one of the coolest looking setups I've ever seen! Looks like a blast to play. Hmmm ...

I've always liked the look of of clear batters and resos on a kick. I just think it looks cool...

Exuberant, or over exuberant? One has its place. Let's not confuse the two :)

Re: The legendary sweet spot

I can sit with my drums and carefully get them into their sweet "range" but that doesn't usually translate well when playing with the band, at which point I pull the drum key back out and crank to...

When I was a teen, Phil Rudd was the easy target. Now when I listen back to him all I hear is his massive pocket and wonder how I could have ever missed it. I think my epiphany with him came when...

Re: Double bill - a first for me - what could possibly go wrong?

I did a double bill a few weeks ago. I've done them only a couple times in the past and was never quite comfortable with the idea of it becoming the "Mike show" so I usually avoid it.

But this...

Re: Lady Gaga on the Oscars.

Hey Larry, I was listening! When I first saw her, via link from this forum, I became a believer. She's the real deal, IMO. And she's savvy with her own marketing. Didn't see the show last night,...
