New tools

Speaking of new tools (that sound just like my other tools) - I got a new kit today. A beautiful Pearl Reference kit in natural maple: 18x22 bass drum, 8x10 and 9x12 rack toms, and 14x14 and 16x16...

Re: A Lesser Kit For Gigging?

I hate using "lesser" drums for a gig. They can be smaller, or there can be less of them, but they cannot be "lesser". All my stuff has to work and sound great - I'm always interested in putting my...

Re: The learning curve

I would think after a while (or in my case, a LONG while), you'd figure out that that new pedal is really just your old pedal in a new package. If it felt too strange and different, you wouldn't...

The learning curve

So on Facebook, Iím a member of a Pearl group. And sometimes I wonder where everybody is on the great drumming learning curve. For instance, the querie today was ďwhat do you think of...

Re: How do you warm up your foot without a bass drum pedal?

A quick game of basketball always works. My personal favorite is ping pong, or tennis. Ride a bike? Anything to get the blood moving and your body moving.

Re: Ok, so was this a "thing" at one time or am I crazy? (Cymbal stack question)

Marco Minnemann still does this with some splash cymbals today.

Re: Frustrated beginner...

Definitely try other set-ups to see what you're comfortable with. However, don't be too upset if you discover that you play better on a fully left-handed kit.

I'm totally left-minded, but I do...

Re: Canít hear my kick!

Although I don't play guitar, I was tempted to get one just to have when I saw them being blown out for $30 at a GC some time ago. Then I could always have it on hand to loan out to an out-of-luck...

Re: How do YOU Tune?

But there isn’t really a secret. I suppose it’s knowing how to know when the head is tensioned evenly, and I assume everyone knows how to do that. Once tension is even at all the rods, it’s just a...

Re: Canít hear my kick!

Well, 15 watts is considerably less then a full-on Fender Twin at 100 watts of tube power. And hey, if weíre talking amateurs, sometimes the extra $40 for that orange Boss distortion pedal is too...

Re: Canít hear my kick!

On the one hand, I can understand guitarists needing to turn up to sound good. Most distorted guitar sounds don't happen until you're really over-driving the amplifier - which is why companies like...

Re: I can't buy a high end snare drum

I think I also said that I didn't have a high-end snare, but I've had a Pearl Reference Pure which cost in that $800+ range (street price, MSRP is much higher), and I'll be playing a Reference snare...

Re: How do YOU Tune?

I tune everything evenly. Meaning I donít have any tension rods tighter or looser than others. Once I have the head reacting the best way evenly, then I can go up or down from depending on taste. ...

Re: Canít hear my kick!

Sometimes I wonder if ďband rehearsing too loudĒ is a phase. I think after a certain age, people figure out if theyíre rehearsing or performing. Actually, they even figure out that theyíre a team...

Re: Hi-z Lo-z

The job of the direct box is to convert hi z to low z. So if your output on the box is an XLR connector then itís obvious you stay in Low Z.

Re: Vintage Slingerland

My first kit was a delapidated gold sparkle Slingerland from the 40s. Your drm makes me miss those. Back in the 70s, my parents bought that kit for $50. Had I known then what I know now....
