Nowhere to practice?

I'm currently sitting at my work desk, Tempo app on my iPhone running in my headphones doing various kick pedal rhythms with my foot rest as an analog.

Anyone have any great tricks to getting the...

Re: Quickest way to improve/fix technique

That's what I'm doing. I have the technique, but it's now a matter of making my timing accurate and fluent on the micro scale. I can play time just fine and I have a generally pretty good clock, but...

Quickest way to improve/fix technique

What are ways you find the best at efficiently improving technique or weeding out the problems in technique, timing etc?

I've found that recently in the studio, when needing to learn a new...

Re: Showmanship

Sounds good to me.

The band I'm in, we like to "rock out" a bit so we throw our bodies into it too. We don't do it when it's going to mess up our performance though.

I think the biggest thing...

Re: Showmanship

It's all about feeling natural and confident behind your instrument on stage. Members of a band that fall back into a corner and don't move or show any form of enjoyment in what they're doing only...

Re: Showmanship

The way I play live is:

Above all, play solidly and naturally. It's okay to make mistakes but when you can't "pull off" your songs live then there's no point playing them.
Be fluid and get...

Re: The decline of the double stroke

Including me. I learnt them to late, or rather was made to learn them (at my own request) too late. I have a few of these "fundamentals" that I just got over in the first year and want to "play" not...

Re: Feet doubles on a single pedal, in "in-between speeds"...

I have a similar problem. The problem really is that I've only been doing heel up for about a year (out of ten years). Kick myself (or my teacher) for never showing me heel up until now.

We have a...

Re: Are you a musician stereotype?

Curious. The guys in the band are pretty much in the middle. We're not sloppy players, we like to be fairly professional in our dealings and like to play our best, but we also have fun on stage and...

Re: Best brand of drum set and why

TAMA is the best by far... Well maybe. I like 'em anyhow. The Star Cast mounting system, the hardware quality and innovative engineering.

This topic is too subjective, really.

Re: Single Kick Pedal Questions

Burying the beater usually means you're tension is looser as they'res less resistance. I tend to like looser tension as it gives the beater (and ultimately the pedal board) more momentum. For me this...

Re: New respect for gigging Drummers...

I treat is as a good 10 minutes (twice) of weight lifting :D

The hardcases I recently bought make it even heavier now. Should look ripped in about... a year? ha

Re: Drummers with Tendonitis, etc.

Correct, relaxed technique is obviously the first remedy if you can't just go cold turkey on the drums, which for most of us, is the case unfortunately.

If you've got good technique and your...

Re: In Live situation, how to transit from a slow to a fast song?

If its up to you to bring the band through a song transition, there's nothing wrong with mouthing a 4 count (assuming a 4/4 song) and looking intently at the other musicians.

Coupled with an...

Re: do i have good technique?

Your hand technique is quite good for having no lessons. Only two things I would say for your left hand is keep that pinky in, and maybe strengthen the stroke (and possibly use rim shots) for that...

Re: Having trouble playing musically with other people, pleease help!

Let me say that after three years, you're not expected to be an insane musical genius drummer (over exaggeration). It takes a lot of time to learn any instrument and feel truly "comfortable" behind...

Re: Virtuoso Drummers?

I must admit, I much more prefer musical creativeness and groove than technical ability and speed. I suppose a good example of this is Steve Gadd. There's a video of him doing some basic pocket funk...

Re: Is too late for me to keep playing?

This sort of thing only really applies to the Jedi :P

Don't worry, just keep practicing and working at it. I started when I was 12 so that's not far off you.

Re: The improvement of musicians

I know that personally I've been on both sides. For some years I was band-less, didn't do lessons and wasn't really improving. Drumming was just a pastime because I had no real requirement for it....

Re: The gigging scene in your area

Well I probably made it sound worse than it is but some decent venues are shutting down lately which sucks, like the Arena and others.

We've played The Zoo a few times, X&Y recently, The Hive and...

Re: The gigging scene in your area

The problem with Brisbane (Aus) is that all the venues are slowly shutting down or converting to non-live venues. It's getting worse and worse. Now there's barely a few larger venues.

Re: What are your latest focuses?

Not too long for me, but one thing I do notice when I'm at that initial slow tempo is exactly what is going on, and I also feel as though I'm gaining more control over placement of the rhythm.

Re: My limitations

I feel the same way. I enjoy playing djembes and congas when I do but for me, nothing is better than jamming on a kit. It's just a combination of the cymbals, the foot work and the groove which makes...

Re: When learning a new song...

Often, I find that I'll only start thinking of playing a song (like a Muse song) after I've been listening and tapping away at it for months. By that time, I'll know it so well that I can rip it out...

Have you tried the foot slide technique?
