Re: A Personal Practice Session That Transcends You...

I totally get the ebbs and flows of drumming progression.
But I can't help but think you are, in part, sabotaging yourself.
It sounds like you've had some real internal and external breakthroughs...

Re: Accenting in Odd Time Signatures

Ahhh very cool ... overriding ... I didn't know it was called that.

Trust Gavin Harrison to summarise it and play it so effortlessly!

But yes, exactly what I was talking about. I might have to...

Accenting in Odd Time Signatures

I've found a small idea that I'm having fun grooving with at the moment and thought I'd share. I find it's helping my accenting and playing beats in odd time signatures.

For instance ... play a...

Re: Finger teqnuiqe excercise

As you've stated, you are of course entitled to your opinion. But it seems like you've had something in your drumming development that has lead you to be anti-finger technique?

You mention Jojo...

Re: Toms ring too long

Mmmm ... I don't think that sounds right.

Decay is how quickly the sound falls away after the attack. Sustain is how long the sounds carries on.

As is to my understanding

Re: cracking cymbals

I would disagree, I've got a couple of 16 inch crashes and a 16 inch china and the china destroys the crashs in volume.

As Todd was saying, there's really nothing that cuts through more than a...

Re: cracking cymbals

To add to the diagram, it means not hitting the cymbal with direct front on force. Instead you hit it from a more acute angle. Like a swipe, rather than a chop.

Watch this clip from Aaron Edgar...

Re: cracking cymbals

I have my china set up at more of an angle and try to strike it with more of a glancing stroke.

Haven't cracked one yet.

Re: Dexterity around the kit

Do your toms have the same amount of rebound as your pad/snare? Probably not.

If you want the same power and control on the toms as you do on the pad/snare, then you may wish to look at developing...

Re: I need double bass help

In relation to the pain you're experiencing... I would recommend having manual therapy such a massage on your hamstrings, your ITB(illio-tibial band)/TFL(tensior fascia latae), quads and your hip...

Re: Knee/ Ball of foot pain and heel up technique

I would say try positioning yourself so the angle is slightly more than 90 degrees.

I also question whether you're burying the beater.

Not only does this have the potential of what Wavelength...

Re: First professional audition on Thursday

That's really annoying and somewhat unprofessional. I've had a similar thing happen to me before so I feel for ya there.

All you can do is draw positives and know that each audition is one step...

Re: Dying for help!

One of the greatest tips I can give is to use two tuning keys at once.

When you're tensioning one rod, use the second key on the opposite rod.

I've found it produces a much more even and...

Re: All time favorite Album.

ISIS were great.

I thought Wavering Radiant was brilliant too and was really looking forward to them going further in that direction.

Big shame they broke up.

Re: I don't have a throne!

I used to play with a cheap, small and thinly padded throne.

I found that I'd often get a sore backside and lower back from bouncing around without enough cushioning. (I often play quite...

Re: This is incredible...

Dribbling the drum stick using your top lip as the fulcrum ... can't say I ever would have thought of that!

Very skilled.

Re: Now it's official, I'm the band mug :)

That is a crazy good place to live!

Looks like a lot of hard work but I'm sure enjoying it everyday would be worth it. Looks like it's far enough away to really let loose on the drums too if you...

Re: Drumming with watches, rings etc..

Thank you very much for the congratulations, I'm loving being married!

I've been drumming with my wedding ring on too and it hasn't really bothered me yet.

I'm generally a sleeves up player as...

Re: Help double bass problem - Pantera song

Welcome. You can post questions like this in the technique section if that helps.

In any case, it sounds like it may be the position of the crash. Why are you having trouble playing it on the...

Re: What Style Eludes You?

I can play in 5/4 but feel I'm not as comfortable improvising as I am in 2/4, 3/4 or 4/4 for example. I tend to sometimes get caught.

Thanks kindly for your explanation and the link to your...

Re: Drumming with watches, rings etc..

Yeah I've had the beater catch on the hem of my pants before too. Doesn't produce quite the same tone as a bass drum does it? ;)
