Re: My 8th's sound like quarters

For push/pull, you have to really get down a solid snap for the second note so that it doesn't sound uneven. One way to think of it while you practice is to focus on accenting the second or "pull"...

Re: The first bar "settling in" period

I've always felt that, if it's not a jam, and everyone knows the song, shouldn't the "settling in" happen during the count-in? There's nothing I love more than a musician who counts to 4, or even...

"The Legendary Sweet Spot" sounds like a band name.

Re: Double Bass Drum Futility

This is why I don't play a double bass setup. The amount of work that must go into that one thing: hitting your bass drum really fast... Is just not worth it unless that's going to be "your thing"...

Re: Double bill - a first for me - what could possibly go wrong?

I've not played for two different bands in a night, but I've done several double nights where we played an early show, packed up, went to another venue and played a late show. It's a lot of work,...

Re: Different kit formats.

Yea, it's something that I lost over time. Starting out, everything had to be just so. At this point, I can play some pretty weird setups without much thought. As we get better, we gain better...

Re: Practice!

A while back you showed us an example of doing the "table of time" on a pad. I do that all the time now, running sub-divisions to a click. I have found it's one of the more "musical" non-musical...

Re: Ever shown up to play with a new musician and realized it was a bad fit immediately?

All I'm saying is that maybe you should mention something like that ahead of time if it's something you're that sensitive about. I've met far more musicians who like to have a drink or toke as they...

Musicians doing drugs?

Everyone knows that no good music has ever been played on drugs. Drugs and music are...

Re: S****y albums done by great bands..

Wow! What makes you say that? Just a fan of the earlier stuff I take it? I love almost that whole album.

Re: Why I Never Collected Famous People’s Autographs

Shows how often I deal with paper checks. It's probably been a few years since I wrote one or thought about it.

Anyway, I've seen "catch me if you can" so I'm pretty much an expert at changing...

Re: Why I Never Collected Famous People’s Autographs

Ha!

I'm going to start taking a checkbook around for signatures when I see celebs.

Fantastic idea.

Re: Writing with the weak hand?

If you work on throwing a ball with your right hand, does your right hand get better at playing drums? No. Because the concept of somehow improving your drumming with stuff that isn't drumming is a...

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

Oh, I see, you only listened to the movie. That probably explains why you didn't get the horror sub-plot, and thought it was at all redeeming.

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

Are you sure it wasn't a horror film? I mean, they must have gone through a lot of blood; and that guys hand technique was down right scary.

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

It's accurate to say that that stupid movie damn near ruined "Caravan" for me. Every time I hear it now, guess what I associate it with?

"Not quite my tempo".

Re: I accept defeat.

Try having bandmates that think a tom you're standing next to should sound like a heavily produced album tom.

They just don't get it. The only way they say my drums sound good is if they are JAW...

Re: Is it OK to talk about the movie "Whiplash" yet?

To force me to watch that shit, you'd have to literally go clockwork orange on my ass with the eye-lid spreaders and captivity chair.

Re: Focusing on finger control or wrist control?

6 months is still beginner category. It typically takes a least a few years to really be able to express yourself, but it depends on a lot of things. This isn't a dig, I just don't want you to feel...

Re: Past a point, are teachers necesssary?

Is a teacher ever necessary to play music? Probably not. Is there pretty much always a lot you can learn from someone further along in their drumming journey? Absolutely yes.

When you don't...

Re: Switching grips

I understand why they did it initially... With a single drum slung over your body at an angle, it makes very little sense to play matched. The angle of the drum begets trad. But this doesn't really...

Re: Focusing on finger control or wrist control?

Forgive me, but it sort of sounds like your insistence on trad grip is holding you back a bit here. Are you doing it because someone you like does, or are you mostly into jazz? I'm not saying...
