Re: The "Jimi Hendrix of drums"

Re: Most important lessons for beginners

Learn how to read music, at least basic notation at first; and learn about other instruments, how those musicians practice and learn.

Re: Realistic Expectations

Part of me wants to play devils advocate and say that it's okay to try to mimic and copy the great drummers, strive to be similar- and it's also okay to have high expectations through commitment. I...

Re: Great hip hop drummers?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WY-Z6wm6TMQ

Jim Gordon was definitely one of the hippest and most sampled!

Re: Gary Chaffee PATTERNS: Your experiences and

Whenever I see Vinnie in this famous Buddy tribute, I think of Gary's systems. That's how I got into it years ago. Also agree with Feldiefeld, at least in my case, seeing other drummers "do it" and...

Re: Jim Gordon

Yeah, great line-up! Impeccable drumming, Carl Radle is excellent as well. 22:00 is the pinnacle of groove and locking-in

Jim Gordon, Jeff Porcaro, and Vinnie Colaiuta all had/had very similar...

Re: Neil Peart

Sure Buddy, Neil and Bonzo are three of the biggest names to non-drummers. I can see that argument. Let's look from a drummers perspective, though. That's where the argument would end for me.

Re: Neil Peart

I think of many other drummers as "top 3 all-around" before Neil, but I really do like some of Rush's music.

Re: Ludwig 400 sound test with music

That's my favorite pitch for the Supraphonic, but yes it does sound boxy.

Re: Neil Peart

That's interesting because I wouldn't put Bonham or Peart in that type of class. Maybe Buddy since he was ridiculously skilled and admired.

Re: Can you identify this Acrolite?

There's an '81 Acro in a local music store and it's available for $130. Similar shape, it needs a little love.

I would keep shopping...they're so readily available that you should be able to find...

Re: Learning to play well on a 4 piece kit ....

Much of what I do lately is kick/snare/hats, sometimes the ride. Making use of what you have with melodic voicing, nuance and subtly is much more challenging and rewarding than simply adding more...

Re: PSA - Lubricate your P85.

Re: Jim Gordon

You did mix-up myself and JohnW for the Chapman remarks. No problem. Thanks for the comments, it's interesting hearing from someone with a background in psychology.

I try to remember Jim Gordon...

Re: A silly question about starting the metronome

Always practice slowly, even if you feel comfortable in the particular tempo. Chances are, your single strokes are not 100% convincing at those slower speeds, even if you can execute them.
Just a...

Re: Gary Chaffee PATTERNS: Your experiences and suggestions

These are all systems to be used in conjunction with each other. The key for me was (1) learning to read it, consume it, digest quickly (2) applying the different materials together, instead of...

Partly. Before all of that, the first several pages of sticking patterns (green book) are the single double accents, etc. I worked out and memorized all of those, including the exercises. Beyond...
