Re: what are some great books about drummers you have read.

"Traps the Drum Wonder", a biography of Buddy Rich written by Mel Tormé. Excellent book.

Re: I know - this is a real first world problem.

I'm sure you can make them sound good and I know 'cause I used to have an LX and they sounded good. But every bit as good as a DW I doubt. Why bother making them if there's no difference? I'm sure...

Re: I know - this is a real first world problem.

I mostly agree and was kidding of course. Although when I have to share and I'm not sure of the other drummer(s) I'll bring my old Rocker. I don't have super high-end gear but I'm happy to gig with...

Re: Anyone else dislike suspension mounts?

I was considering drilling and mounting my tom brackets on the shell but decided against it. I'm afraid to mess with the sound and that's an irreversible mod. And I like that with RIMS I can orient...

Re: New Gretsch Renown Birch

Yeah, if I could choose I'd go with a 16x16 floor tom and a shorter bass drum. I like the rack tom sizes though.

Re: New Gretsch Renown Birch

I love that finish and the piano black will be sweet as well. I have a Renown Maple and the kick sounds great though it's a pain to lug around. I think a good compromise would be the good old 22x16...

Re: Your thoughts on this DW Collector Series kit

The only leeway you have in that regard is where you mount it along the L-arm. So if you want the two toms at different heights you have a bit of wiggle room but not much. There's no reason to have...

Re: No love for 20" bassdrums?

I'll also chime in as a 20 lover. I like 22 and bigger also but 20 is a little easier to lug around without the big difference in sound that an 18 has.

Re: The 18 inch bass drum thread!

NOTE: This reply is in response to Airborne's post, not the necro-thread OP.

Unless you're playing jazz exclusively you should get a 20"x14". Negligible difference in weight and size for lugging...

Re: Remo SilentStrokes and Gen16's. My review for apartment dwelling drummers.

Thanks for the review. I live in an apartment and was thinking of getting some mesh heads and getting rid of my V-drums. I never feel like I'm practicing on those, just kind of noodling with cool...

Re: Joe Morello on Buddy Rich Part 3

I agree. I've never considered those drum battles as competitive but more as a conversation between drummers. I mean Buddy and Gene (or Max) actually played tunes together not just drum solos. It may...

Re: The power of nostalgia

It's funny but this is not the case for me at all. As I've grow older my tastes have changed. I grew up playing and loving Tama back in their 80's heyday. I had a Swingstar and eventually my dream...

Re: Small and easy to transport drum kit

Certainly they'll work for practice but I expect you'll grow tired of the sound fairly quickly. I tapped on a Breakbeats at a store the other day and I thought it sounded awful especially the floor...

Re: Club Date SE snare...forgot how awesome it is.

Me too. I put coated G1's (usually use coated G2) on the toms and used them yesterday on a gig. Opened up beautifully but still punchy. The tone of these drums just pleases me to no end. The bass...

Re: Club Date SE snare...forgot how awesome it is.

For some reason I thought you had the 6.5, Bob. I would be curious to hear that size. These snares are a bargain.

I'm also itching to get a CD 13-16-22 kit like yours.

Re: Club Date SE snare...forgot how awesome it is.

I did have a good time! It was a birthday party for a friend and lots of us are musicians so we put together a show for her. I played 6 songs on drums and 3 on guitar. Was a blast.
