Re: Why is jazz drumming still so dominant?

I think in the US, blues are probably the most popular amongst drummers, then jazz, and rock. Rock is initially attractive, but it doesn't make sense for amateurs, there just aren't that many venues...

Re: Practice space-the age old problem

While, I think there is something to sitting in isolation, until you sound good. Getting out is better, plenty of parks and such out there. I'm a big fan of portable percussion. It is quite a...

Re: Percussionist Getting on my Nerves

You could suggest, auditioning another (lead) percussionist for a percussion section.

Re: Percussionist Getting on my Nerves

Drum set and percussion is almost an oxymoron, the whole point of the drum set was to simplify the percussion section and boil it down so that one person could sort of function as the percussion...

Re: Trigger Controlled Light Show?

I kind of interested in this. I have many hobbies, and one includes photography. I have studio strobes sitting there next to my kit. I've kind of wondered if there would be some way to connect the...

Polyrhythms and certain genres

I like to work on different styles of music, and I've noticed that certain polyrhythms go with certain styles of music more than others.

For example jazz swing is very amenable to 5 vs 4...

Re: quality of drum sounds to the rest of the band is not important

Playing at talking volume is difficult.

I would recommend using jazz equipment, which is designed to get good tone at low volumes, however it seems as if even a piano trio setup is too loud.

Re: I suck at power ballads.

I think the function is different also. The singers are actually telling a story acting and dancing and interacting with the pit orchestra.

Re: I suck at power ballads.

I liked the percussion part :), it was pretty good as ballads go.

This Saturday, I thought about it some. I think I like the ballads that were written for musicals or movies, which is where many...

Re: I suck at power ballads.

I'm with you, I change the station, when there is anything that resembles a ballad comes on. I do like the older Jazz Ballads, Summertime, Funny Valentine etc. I'm not sure why the modern ballads...

Re: Exercises/rudiments -vs- or solos/excerpts

Pretty much the only thing I practice these days are polyrhythms.

Re: YOUR BETTER AT BECAUSE OF DRUMS

Truth be known, the inspiration usually flows from sex to the drums, not the other way around.

Re: YOUR BETTER AT BECAUSE OF DRUMS

Chopsticks. When my wife met me she commented on how well I use chopsticks, I didn't think much about, but said it was probably because I play drums and holding the sticks and squeezing the fingers...

Re: time keeping/ guitarists

Some songs sound good in ritardando, but not many.

Everyone should keep time.

If he is trying to keep time, that should ultimately be workable.

Typically guitarists serve more as phrase...

Re: How to Make Any Odd Meter Feel Like 4/4

Those are pretty cool. Any idea where the 11 grouping might arise. It sounds out there like doo-ee-ewe space.

Native American Snare Drum

Native American Snare Drums

Continuing my tour of drums in Native American traditions. I have run across several references to snares in Native American traditions, I decided to track these down,...

Re: Space Aliens at the local bar

I've been meaning to try out the local Korean Karoake place. Though from what I understand, Karoake is expensive where you rent a small room and invite only close friends.

Re: Native American Drum Mount

It isn't exactly what I want either. The tone isn't nearly as good when I hold on to the frame. The rawhide suspension is awesome, the whole thing radiates, also the frame itself provides a very...

Re: Native American Drum Mount

I was thinking about using a cymbal stand, maybe with a cradle of some sort. Like a four prong fork for it to rest on.

I did get the ankle rattles out, I had to modify them to be bigger, but this...

Re: Latin Percussion???

When you sort of teach yourself the instrument and the people you play with don't really understand or respect it, that is what happens. I used to put electrical tape on my fingers to play a djembe...

Re: Do 3/4 and 6/8 ‘flow’ better for you?

Yeah, I've even caught myself counting in 12/8 when playing straight 4/4. Like an internal polyrhythm.

There are also the tresilo type approximations to a 6/8 in 4/4, which I highly recomend...
