Re: Colder weather playing

In college I played drums in the pep band at all the hockey games. It was probably high 40's/low 50's in the ice rink, and I never had any problems if I just warmed up for a few minutes. Once you get...

Re: Pocketless drummers

Zach Hill (from Hella) certainly has no pocket, and it's unlike any drumming I've ever heard. He's described himself as playing "lead drums"...sounds about right to me.

Re: LATIN JAZZ BANDS PLEASE

Tito Puente
Eddie Palmieri
Irakere
Poncho Sanchez
Michel Camilo
Paquito D'Rivera

Those are some of my favorites, all with excellent drumming. They should keep you occupied for a while.

Re: Non musicians opinion about musicians

Here are a few assumptions about rock and roll musicians I've gathered from my own conversations with non-musicians:

1. We are all potheads.
2. We have many groupies whom we regularly sleep...

Re: Drum idiosyncrasies

I've noticed that every time a drummer (myself included) sits down at a drumset for the first time, they always have to adjust the hi-hat clutch.

Re: Drummer vs. Computer

Did I miss something, or can drum machines improvise now too?

Re: Are Guitarists in Denial about the Drumset ?

This is spot on. Any musician who doesn't respect the importance of the other instruments in the band is not a musician you want to play with. Some of the responses from guitarists on the other forum...

Re: HipGig owners, please HELP!

I have the Rick Marotta Hipgig, and it's a 16" tom head. I'm willing to bet the Manu Katche is the same. I was under the impression they only make BD heads as small as 18", but maybe I'm wrong.

Re: wow, thrones make a difference

I would even go so far as to say that the throne is the most important part of your drum kit. If you're not comfortable in your seat when you play, you're not going to want to play as much.

Re: Bass Drum Beaters. Tell me your favorite!

I've got the PureSound Speedball Beaters (felt). They're much lighter than my worn-out DW beaters, but they have the little weights so you can adjust the feel of them, which I like a lot. They seem a...

Re: Getting a good drum sound outside

Cool, thanks for the track. Sounds good!

I'm not really looking for that intense metal "feel it in your stomach" kick, just a well-balanced overall sound.

For now I'm just going to play around...

Re: Getting a good drum sound outside

Thanks for the tips everyone.

My band has a fairly modest PA (basically just 2 speakers and a monitor wedge), so it may be time to invest in some subs.

Re: Getting a good drum sound outside

It's usually a 24". How do you usually tune your bass drum for outside? Do you use any muffling? How do you EQ it?

I usually keep both heads about medium-loose, and have an Evans EQ pad, and a 6"...

Re: Getting a good drum sound outside

Thanks TTNW for the tips.

I'm not playing big outdoor festivals/stadiums or anything, mostly just outdoor restaurants/parties, so people are going to hear some of the drum sounds directly. I...

Getting a good drum sound outside

So, it's the summer time here and that means a lot of outdoor gigs. I always have a tough time getting a drum sound that I like when playing outside, especially in the bass drum. I play mostly hard...

Re: How do you lay down a drum track in a song?

In most of the bands I've been in, the guitarist (or main songwriter) will lay down a scratch track of the song, fully arranged, to a click. This scratch track may or may not have...

Re: Forgotten Drummers

Kyuss is one of those great forgotten bands. They came out around the same time as grunge, and since they weren't from Seattle they were mostly ignored. It's all musical politics. Some would say...

Name That Drum Fill

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=126973303&sc=nl&cc=mn-20100521

This showed up on NPR's music blog a couple days ago, and I figured a site full of drummers would appreciate it!...

Re: do drum teachers have drum teachers?

My first drum teacher, the one who taught me how to play drums years back, said that his job as a teacher was to put himself out of a job. He wanted me to learn enough from him that I could pick up...

Re: best afrocuban album?

Well, the reason Tito no longer plays is because he passed away 10 years ago.

If I had to pick a best album, I'd probably pick Dance Mania, by Tito Puente. It's a good place to start if you're...

Re: Recording Drums With 8 Mics Max

Condenser mics are the name of the game for overheads. Although for a demo I wouldn't be so quick to rush out and buy more stuff -- you can probably work with what you've got. The mic that came in...

Re: Calises and blisters!

I think the issue when you're a beginner is that you have neither calluses nor perfect technique, so you're going to blister no matter what. Once you learn to relax and loosen your grip, big calluses...

Re: Recording Drums With 8 Mics Max

What kind of mics do you have at your disposal?
What style of band is this? What kind of drum sound are you going for?

Just because you have a bunch of mics doesn't mean you need to use all of...

How to get over a creative rut?

It happens to everyone at some point, where you just feel you can't create anything original when you sit down at the drums. You feel like you're just rehashing the same standard grooves, the same...
