Re: Ordered a Whitney nesting kit

I think I recall someone on this forum having one of these kits, and I know for sure that there's a guy who's done YouTube videos of his playing on a Whitney kit--good player--Jimmy Kadesch:

Re: Advice: Sonor or Pearl

Well, I have a Yamaha RC for use in 20/14/12/10 and a mis-matched, piece-togethered Tama kit. So, I'd kind of like to have nice bop kit one day.

Gretsch, I know, is nice and the standard, but...

Re: Advice: Sonor or Pearl

Really? I looked up the Phonic kits via Sonormuseum on the Web, and the old brochures state that the Phonic shells are "9-ply German beech," with no clear reference to thickness. On the SQ2 site,...

Advice: Sonor or Pearl

Just saw that post about Freitas playing a Pearl jazz kit, which coincides with kits I'm looking at. For a bebop set (18/14/12), which would you rather have?

1. Sonor SQ2 medium beech shells...

Question about Snare Beds

I have a Pearl Omar Hakim mahogany snare and really like it, and I'm thinking of getting a Masterworks snare made with somewhat similar specs: 5.5x14 snare, 8 ply, 4 inner mahogany, 2 middle birch, 2...

Pearl Crystal Beat Updates?

Has anyone by chance played the new Pearl Crystal Beat acrylic kits? Thoughts? They seem well made (strong cast shells, and Pearl's usually pretty good at building strong shells) from what I've...

Re: Tom Mounts on George Way Kit?

Update: I've heard that those Gibraltar mounts pictured on the Way kit and being used by Purdie in the video (both in this thread) are actually not that great--that they tend to choke the resonance...

Re: Tom Mounts on George Way Kit?

Thanks for the clarification, guys, and double thanks for the photo, Art.

It looks like the Gibraltar two-lug RIMS mount:

Tom Mounts on George Way Kit?

Can anyone tell what kind of tom mounts Bernard Purdie is using on his George Way kit in this video? It is from the Regina Drum Festival 2014 (footage uploaded by Ronn Dunnett):

George Way Drum Kits?

Are there any thoughts or personal reviews of Dunnett's Way kits from forum members here? I seen various demos online of the maple/poplar/maple, cherry wood, and walnut wood kits, but I was...

Re: Allegra Big Baby...

Well, Gretsch and Slingerland were both doing 10x20 and 10x26 or 24 bass drums years ago. And I believe Allegra's founder, Dave Peterson, worked for Slingerland back in the day. So, not so sure about...

Re: Allegra Big Baby...

Cool drums and sound pretty good. Also awesome hardware--solid aluminum lugs.

Anyone "worried" about the thinness of the tom shells? They're 6-ply maple but only 4 mm (3.87 mm actually) thick. A...

Mapex Armory vs. Yamaha Stage Custom?

Anyone have any insights into which kit would be the "better" purchase? Both are evenly priced, both have 8-lug bass drums, the Yamaha has a "rounded bearing edge" while the Mapex has the rounded...

Re: GMS & Ludwig

Thanks for the feedback. Bermuda, Andy kind of mentioned something I mean by "quality" when he stated, "The only thing I've found with all swivel barrel type insert lugs, is that the very shallow...

GMS & Ludwig

Is there a significant quality difference between Ludwig Classic Maples and GMS SE maple drums? The GMS lugs are handmade of solid brass, I believe, and leave a small footprint compared to the...

Gigging Kit: Taye or Pearl SSC?

Looking for a decently priced gigging kit--something that will sound very good but without worries about possible dings, etc.

Which is the better quality kit for such purposes?

1. Taye...

GMS Grandmaster (used) or Tama (new)?

I've been looking into folks' suggestions about Tama Starclassic B/B kits. Most folks here seem to like them, they sound good overall, and the mounting hardware is pretty cool/user friendly.

I...

Pearl Session Studio Custom

Does anyone have any thoughts on the new Pearl SSC kits? They seem good, especially for the price. Are they worth an investment, or is the quality really not there?

Thanks.

Pre-2009 Starclassic Performers

Were the pre-2009 Tama Starclassic Performers (the birch kits, before the B/B kits were developed) made in Japan? The SC B/B are made in China, but I think the original Performers (birch) may have...

Re: Help Decide: Saturn or Starclassic B/B

Mike,

You touch on an issue that makes this question difficult. I have a nice birch kit but do still like the Tamas, but the maple/walnut of the Saturn seems to offer a punchy sound with more...

Re: Help Decide: Saturn or Starclassic B/B

Thanks for the opinions, all. Think I'm leaning more towards the Tama--I like the mounting devices and hardware better, for one. Sound on both is pretty good.

Just found a Japanese-made SC Maple...

Thanks for opinions!
