Id go for the catalina club jazz kit. I dont own the set but I've heard that style kit a few times while working as a live sound tech. Honestly, they sound really good.

If hes in a small room with lots of reflective surfaces, the drum can pretty harsh sounding.

The a thin tea napkin may help but it will effect the rebound/feel.

Id probably just wear ear...

The yamaha sub kick shouldn't be used by itself. Its not a full range transducer. You need to use the Yamaha Sub Kick with another kick drum mic like a shure beta 52 or akg D112.

Im likely getting a 12x9 rack tom, ratio wise the 14x11 seems like the right choice.

But it would be my only floor tom so i'd want to perform more like that.
