Re: D'Angelo - Black Messiah

Not to hijack - but another really cool new album is Screaming Headless Torso’s “Code Red” I discovered these two albums on the same day, and they’re kind of fun to listen to back to back. Both...

Re: Drumming as Art

IMO Billy Ward really covers these concepts well in both of his DVDs - what he calls "practice-playing “ is a great way to develop your own voice...

Re: Now a morning drummer

That’s cool that you figured out a way to practice within your new schedule. I was never a morning person, but early morning practice is the only steady time that I can get on the kit.

All good...

Re: leaving the kick beater on the bass head?

I haven’t seen Jojo’s DVD - but it’s probably good.

Here are a couple of things to try:
1. Start by playing heel down. After you achieve some strength and coordination, your heel-up playing will...

Re: Playing 15 years, terrible stick control

Without seeing your hands, it’s hard to give specific advice - but revamping your grip will probably help. It might feel like starting over, but I’ve seen players make the adjustments pretty quickly...

Re: Playing with exaggerated dynamics.

I’d say start with Pratt’s “14 Modern Contest Solos” - pieces like “Drum Corps on Parade” are fun to play and will give you lots of dynamics to work with. “The New Pratt Book” is also good.

In my...

Re: Playing with exaggerated dynamics.

Dynamics are a very big part in what we do - and playing dynamics is all about stick heights. To play consistently and relaxed, it’s about controlling the height of your sticks so you can call upon...

Re: leaving the kick beater on the bass head?

Things we do on the kit should be out of our own volition - techniques like burying the beater should be done out of choice, not because that’s what your foot feels like doing at the time.

Keep your bass...

Re: Using Left Foot Hi-Hat, Does It Help Improve Time?

I also like to use my hi hat heel to keep time. Also keep in mind that different “beats” with your hi hat foot will give you different feeling grooves. If you tap up beats your groove will sound...

Re: Snare question: 8 vs 10 lug differences?

Historically 6 or 8 lug snares were found in the budget category, and the high end snares had 10.

After playing the usual 10-luggers for years, owning a Dunnett got me interested in 8 lug snares. ...

Re: Supra > Acro

I’ve always much preferred the Supra over the Acro. I like the extra “mass” on the Supra - I think the extra lugs and the chrome plating makes the drum heavier and gives a nice focused quality that...
