Re: Tom rhythms

I think patterns with some sort of double stroke in them sound better on toms. It can sound really clunky if you use only single strokes. Accents are also important when playing on toms to give it...

Re: Drumming: the spiritual side

Some great responses here.

Someone close to me asked me why I HAVE to do this. I don't get paid, it's a ton of time and work involved. Equipment costs money, gas to gigs and practice cost money....

Re: Drumming: the spiritual side

That's a good point. You can always find drums in a church. They have been part of ritual ceremonies since someone first strapped an animal skin to a hollowed out log. Wonder what it is about the...

Drumming: the spiritual side

Something a little different.
Last night before practice my bandmates and I had a great discussion about life and relationships. We were discussing the concept of love, and how that means letting go...

Re: The dreaded drumshare.

In my experience, few drummers would share kits if given the choice.
This decision/request seems to commonly originate from the soundman or bar owner.

It's always awkward when the soundman...

Re: Showmanship

I find videotaping yourself is a great practice tool. The camera don't lie.

There is a fine line between being boring and trying to be something you are not. You gotta throw a little showmanship...

Re: Billy Cobham

Had the great pleasure of seeing Billy last night at the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia.
The man is simply a phenomenon. His touch on the drums is incredible, his sense of groove, his...

Re: What is your favorite fill based on a rudiment?

LOVE this one. Once you start "displacing" it- the possibilities are pretty endless. This actually opened a whole new world of incorporating doubles on the kit for me. I like doing the singles on...

Re: Do all Starclassic Maples say "Maple" on the drums?

Weird. If I google "starclassic honey maple"- the first result is the CL ad, and the third is this thread. Is it that way for everybody?
Your link doesn't work, btw.

Re: Playing songs the same way every time? and same set-up?

Bwahahaha....yeah, reading back I realized how tame that sounded. I am still reforming from my Neil Peart approach.

Re: Playing songs the same way every time? and same set-up?

The approach you described is pretty much mine. I know what you mean about having that foundation to work from.

I played a gig a couple nights ago where I brought a totally different set-up, and...

Playing songs the same way every time? and same set-up?

Something I've been thinking about (always dangerous):

When you come up with a drum part for an original song- do you adhere to that same part for eternity? Or do you improvise when you play it...

Re: Amazing double stroke roll!

Maybe this is more clear:

RLLRRLLRRLLRRLLRRLL...

If you begin a series of double strokes with a single, they will likely sound much more even. It will prevent the tendency to accent the first...

Re: Amazing double stroke roll!

Everyone knows the secret to getting smooth doubles, right?-- start with a one single stroke and then go double. It helps with the natural tendency to accent the first stroke. Give it a shot!

Re: making progress without a drum set

What I find about working with a pad is that it will make you play things you would not normally play on a kit. I work a lot with trad grip on the pad.
Then, over time, you can start doing it on...

Beer when gigging?

This has probably been raised before (no pun intended), but do you drink beer when you play live?
Some swear against it, some might have one or at the most two to relax (like me) and others can't...

Re: Have you ever ben told to stop hiting things at a drum shop?

People treat drum departments like public playgrounds.

I worked at GC- and every Saturday morning there was a steady stream of idiots coming in the door to bang on the drums and show off their...

Re: PDP or Crush?

I've been using the Crush acrylics for about six months. I bought the five-piece: 22, 10,12,16, and 14" snare. I personally prefer them over a PDP.

It's a badass kit! It's a different sound- it...

Re: Cars/trucks for gigging. Which ones do you use?

I finally got the ultimate gig vehicle- Nissan Frontier 4x4 pickup with Crew Cab V6. My whole kit fits in the inside, and got the long bed to carry a mountain of gear if I have to.

For years I...

Re: Have you ever temporarily stopped drumming due to health issues?

Broke my hip in a motorycycle accident and that kept me off the drums, but only for a few weeks.
In general it seems like drumming would be good for any type of healing process. Relatively low...

Re: Portnoy Gets a Wee Bit Upset

Man, I've been listening to Dream Theater since their first album 23 years ago but I have to say this pushes it over the edge for me. I can appreciate the drumming but not sure what the person has...

Re: Dating band members

Much, much much more can go wrong in that situation than can go right.

I would date a girl in my band if I cared more about her than the band, which wasn't happened yet.

Re: Band Construction.

The older you get, the more scrutiny you give to offers to join bands, because you've been through so many of the common experiences.
Myself and my bandmates are like brothers- we are very lucky...

Re: Anyone ever sit down at a friend's drumkit that "sounds awesome" and

I once was told I would be using the opening band's kit for a show in Baltimore, so I packed up my snare, cymbals and pedals and headed up.

When the opening band is done the drummer says he didn't...
