Re: Yamaha's Chinese Factory Quality

I'm in the clothing industry, and surprisingly we seem to be one of the few markets that is not largely made in China. Look at the tags on all of your tee shirts and you will find "Made in Haiti, El...

Re: Yamaha's Chinese Factory Quality

My Yamaha background - I've had Recording Custom and Beech Custom kits in the past and currently have a Maple Custom AN with a Weckl snare and a Copper Nouveau snare. I am in love with my 9500 series...

Re: Going to Dave Weckl clinic

I've seen him 5 times including on the latest Yamaha 30 year anniversary clinic tour. It was very entertaining until the audience questions part, where you can expect some seriously stupid questions...

Re: Should I give up this hobby for drumming?

I'm 40 and can play drums pretty well, am a scratch + bowler, better than average at darts, teach marching band, play functional piano, harmonica, and ukulele. The "jack of all trades, master of...

Re: Nice...or not so much

I've got a nice one...

Mid 90s, I was 23 or so. A buddy and I went to see a Dave Weckl clinic with a concert afterward at a local bar. We had both been worshiping his playing for several years....

Re: Help with Green Day Song? (When I come around)

I'm not sure if this will help you or add gas to the fire. I just recorded this a few days ago for my youtube channel, but I won't have a chance to edit and post it in time to help you. I did a...

Re: Staining drum heads with coffee

I'd go with tea. It WILL NOT come out of clothes. Brew something black like English Breakfast for 15 minutes. You could also buy a 10" Fiberskyn head for 10 or 12 bucks and try a few things out...

Re: Too Old To Seriously Take Up Drumming?

I think the main advantage to learning an instrument young is that you don't realize that you suck during the process, so keep at it regardless. I have run into this several times while trying to...

Re: Are 13" toms obsolete?

I'm a big fan of even intervals as it seems to make tuning much easier for me. If I want 3 toms, I go 10/13/16 and 10/12/14/16 when I need 4. My theory has always been to buy all the available add on...

I'm a chick band fan, so...

Darrel Hall (sounds awesome on Live @ Darrel's House)
Prince

Re: How do you guys learn songs ?

I like your entire approach but especially the recording. One you bite the bullet and buy a recorder, "rolling tape" is really free and easy these days.

Re: Competition - early heads up for forum members :)

Can you clarify the categories a little bit? Specifically the difference between Experienced hobbyist and Semi professional.

Thanks for a great competition!

Re: How do you guys learn songs ?

Depending on how accurately I need to reproduce the song later, I'll do anything from a full note-for-note transcription to a quick multi-listen cram session in the car on the way to rehearsal....

Re: Yamaha Drums

I'd argue that right after NAMM is the best time to buy a kit, especially one like the SCB that has been proven as good quality. Recently discontinued stuff can be had at a steal if the timing is...

Re: Yamaha Drums

The high where I teach has one of those on their big band kit. It sounds killer and is very versatile. I ended up with this one, which is a serious workhorse drum for me:

Re: Craviotto Worth The Money?

Agreed - I have a really nice pro level maple kit, and it's VERY EASY to get it to sound horrible if I'm not paying attention. When tuned well, they are really sweet, but just as easily sound awful....

Re: Erroneously entitled: "Nobody Cares"

Last February I started playing out a Crush acrylic kit. At nearly every gig, someone comes up and tells me how cool it looks. I don't believe anyone has ever commented on the sound apart from sound...

Re: How to mic bass drum on a budget?

You could probably dispense with the mixer and go direct into the amp with an XLR-1/4" cable.

Re: Just how much DO drummers make?

I remember seeing Dave Weckl's ebay listing for the wine red Recording Custom kit he did all his early videos with and I suspect some Chick Corea work. I thought at the time it was strange because...

Re: Kick drum on 2 and 4

I grew up as well never doubling any back beats with a kick. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to really get comfortable with it later. I could never line them up totally. Of course whether...

Re: Does anyone here wear two different shoes for hi hat and bass drum pedals?

The sole are totally different - the slide foot has a slick felt front and the other is just a rubber sole. I see many guys wearing shoes from different pairs to get the correct feel. Sometimes it's...
