Re: Names of the drums and cymbals - origins? etymology

Sort of. A gong has a definite pitch whereas a tam tam does not.

Re: Unpopular Drumming Opinion Thread

I'm a 4 piece guy but i too share this opinion. My favorite kit is a 20 13 16. It was a standard configuration when it was made. I can deal with a 20 12 14 kit but it I prefer the older standard. I...

Re: Any brass arrangers amongst us?

Post some PDF's of your brass parts and we'll be in a better position to help. Well, full score would be better. It's hard to help someone with writing when there is nothing to read to get the idea....

Re: Will anyone ever write another 'classic'

Well, just remember how the majority of songs that have been described as classics were disseminated. Sheet music and a combination of amateur and profesional renderings. Recorded sound been around a...

Re: Will anyone ever write another 'classic'

This! However i think you also missed a key component that all those songs have in common and that is extremely fine compositional craftsmanship. Musical composition is a craft like any other. I've...

Re: One for the teachers - Must listen songs for drummers?

I dont really have must listen songs. I tend to show all my students Sing Sing Sing but that is really because Krupa is my all time favorite and he is historically significant in terms of modern...

Re: Demotivated. How do you freshen up?

My way of rekindling the passion for drumming or any other instrument is to focus on another instrument for a bit. Saturation happens. When i'm in a good phase i do a pretty good drumming session...

Re: Double bass opinions

THIS! The Hi-Hat is an amazing instrument that ought not be neglected. And yes i do feel the same way about people using double pedals to do things that a single pedal would suffice for. I dont have...

Re: Your Holy Grail

Holy Grail kit? Late 60's-early70's Ludwig 3 ply WMP 20 13 16 kit with a 14x5 LM300 or a Supralite. I'm a sucker for steel snares. Other than the WMP part i have this kit. but i found it on the...

Re: Help ME??

Another vote for the Yamaha. But then I've never gotten along with either Tama Rockstars or Paiste 302s. I do like B8's for the most part as far as budget cymbals go. Also another on upgrading the...

Re: Just digging it?

Last time was yesterday. Was jamming with my guitarist and we were just locked in. You know the type where both of you will go completely off and not look at each other but land on the I chord after...

Re: Is one genre of music really harder to play than another

There are really only 2 genres of music. Sacred and Profane. In both it depends on the piece being played and the drummer playing it. Someone said something about "Jazz" rhythms being more complex....

Re: Drum beat in this music

It's a slow 4/4 with the guitars doing mostly sixteenths. I'd try sixteenths on the ride and play around with bass and snare alternations in sixteenths plus some tasteful syncopations here and there...

Re: Getting madder by the day

Well the score for tenor and string quartet seems to bear out your summary admirably. Some really odd harmonies....would be a nightmare to perform. Yeah....i had minor surgery on friday and they gave...

Re: Getting madder by the day

No, not yanking your chain at all. An older dictionary will be closer to a word's creation and actual or original meaning. In English almost every word has been adopted at one point or another to...

Re: Getting madder by the day

Hmm seems the definition has changed. I was looking at merriam-webster 1929 or 30 edition. It was my grandfathers. I must get an older one because that will be a bit more accurate language wise...

Re: Skills that's good for any band-member to have except instrumental/singing skills and music theo

Composition and arranging. Want a horn section for your group? You have to be able to write out those parts in the correct transpositions within the ranges of the instrument and understanding that...

Re: What's with the who?

I would suggest that musicals/operas have GREAT music a high percentage of the time. (Don Giovani, La Traviata Carousel, Showboat, Porgy and Bess for example are immortal musical masterpieces) More...

Re: 20x20 vs 20x18 bass drum?

I play one at work. Sounds like playing in a tunnel. In my opinion that is not desirable.Might use it for a specific effect on a recording but not on any gigging kit. My best luck has been with bass...

Re: Flutes and Clarinets in Jazz Band?

I stand corrected. But I haven't met a working wind player that didn't have a handle on playing flute and clarinet in addition to his chosen instrument of saxophone. Kinda' like how all Disney...
