Re: 3-dimensional drumming

Great place to start. You need to work on the rudi's too, and the strokes (single, double, buzz, etc). DS family is the key to jazz, learn to play that LH&RH leads as trips and 16ths with the...

Re: Matt Griener anyone..?

Kid is from my town, I've seen him around the local drum store Drum's Etc (he teaches there). Every time I see his VF, etc ads I can't believe it! Great drummer.

Hey guys looking to reopen this again. Trying to play "Kissing My Love" by Bill Withers, which is at 92bpm (studio) and am having a lot of trouble getting past 85bpm currently.

Re: Hip-Hop feel

I believe the hip-hop is based on 16th note triplets (1 a trip a let a 2...) and 16th note accents (1 e & a 2 e & a...) Start your metronome at 40bpm and slowly work to control the up-down motion...

Re: Realistic Expectations

I think a realistic expectation is does it make YOU happy? If everyone that played did so because they thought they'd be Buddy Rich, no one would be on this board right now.

For me, when I get...

Re: Making the most out of limited practice time

Yes! love me some Steve Jordan. I think the best way to work on limb independence would be to take the different grooves you mentioned, and break them down limb by limb, then 2 at a time, 3, then all...

Re: complete beginner; problem with bass drum technique

I prefer heel down for balance, but it really is all preference. This Ginger Baker video he says "the only way to play is heel up" - which is not true, but like you said, as long as it doesn't hurt...

Re: Tempo problems!

Try 40bpm for 20 minutes a day and see where you are in a week. Slowness creates control, and grooving gets easier when you start to work up the tempo.

Re: The mediocre drum guru?

I think your head is in the right place, in "don't worry about being good, worry about being better." There will always be someone looking up to you (young and old) just as we all look up to others....

Re: I Play Better When I Donít Practice

That's a good idea. I've gone through this spectrum of practice/no practice myself. I used to practice the day of a gig, and would feel on the gig less energy to play. I then stopped touching the...

Re: I want to play jazz standards on my drums.

Two things to add:

1. This site can be helpful to learn the 'heads' (aka melody) of the tune: http://www.learnjazzstandards.com/

2. Listen to recordings of songs with a vocalist - you can pick...

Heel-toe: bass pedal tension?

I had an AMAZING private lesson with Bernard Purdie recently!!! He helped me disect a lot of bad habits that were tightening me up, including relying on heel-up playing all the time which was really...

Re: The black dog when practicing

you need to learn to love it! my first suggestion is always practice patterns, beats, rudiments, etc with music. metronome is a good starting place, but when you have control, you need to play music.

Re: Uptempo jazz studies - dancing on the ride and comping

Thank you for the tips everyone. I am having a lot of trouble in the 235+ range currently. I notice my fingers are coming off the stick, this doesn't sound like it should be happening?
