Re: How do you save up for gear purchases?

I primarily use gig money. When I have enough saved, I go buy the cymbal, snare, etc.

This doesn't always apply to consumables such as sticks and heads.

Re: hi hat dis-assembly

Same here. My gig case is only a little under 3 feet long so I have to break down the hi-hat stand. Actually, I don't put the top tube back on; I have a memory lock on my hi-hat stand.

My hi-hat...

Re: What full albums do you like to drum along to?

I don't think I've drummed along to an entire album for a long, long time. When I started playing I did it a lot. The Black Crowes' "Shake Your Money Maker" was a favorite.

Re: The matching snare

A while back, I got a great deal on a used Sonor Safari. Luckily, it came without the snare so no issues there.

My Classic Maples came with a matching snare. A beautiful WMP finish. However, I...

Re: Important question from the new guy.

Which guitarist / band was the FIRST to raise the guitar during a show ?
And, who was the first guitarist to be flipped upside down ( intentional or otherwise) ?

Also...how many licks does it...

Re: Do you ever stand back from your drums...

Good to know I'm not alone in this...

I keep one of my kits set up in our basement. I almost always give a loving swipe to one of my cymbals whenever I walk by the kit. I feel very blessed too...

Re: Best way of going about this...

Glad I could help...

That format has pretty much become my default. It's so clear where everything is; all you have to do is glance at it.

I sometimes write the first line of the verse/chorus...

Re: Best way of going about this...

Gregg Bissonette shows a pretty handy way to chart a song as well.

Re: Snare on 1 and 3?

The beginning of Jimmy Rogers' "Walkin' By Myself" has the snare on 1 and 3.

The drummer switches after a few bars though. I've always wondered if that whole thing was intentional.

Re: The "I wish I hadn't opened my big mouth" thread ;)

I've seen some of your clips. You're selling yourself way short.

You are rock solid, my man. Play to your strengths. You will do fine.

When you come back with an update on this in a few...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Just keep a couple things in mind.

Those hits come on the off beats, so don't get turned around.

That, and most horn players might not appreciate drummers who crash right in the middle of...

Re: Al Jackson jr break in Turn You Loose. . . sounds simple . . .

Yeah, it sounds like the horn hits are coming on the off beats.

Just count along to it and you will eventually get it. Don't let the horns throw you off. Keep counting straight through; you...

Re: The session guys!

There's also Fred Below at Chess Records. The standard of what makes a great blues drummer.

Re: A good wooden snare from hardcore to jazz

Possibly the Mapex Black Panther Retrosonic snare? I think it's walnut. If I recall correctly, it had a pretty dark low pitched sound to it.

Re: Funky Buddy

I could be wrong, but it appeared to be the Playboy mansion or something. Don't ask how I know. :-)

In one of the shots of the crowd I thought I spied what looked like a young (younger...) Hugh...

Re: Orchestrate phrases around the set - Jazz

This is pretty much what I have done; with transcribed stuff and the AOB licks. As well as a few other things.

I adopted what Kenny Washington told me when I had the opportunity to meet him fairly...

Re: Endorsements... A two way street?

We do cover this topic quite often on here. I hope by now most folks know how endorsements work.

However, the other day I was wondering if there was any compensation for artists that are seen in...

Re: Thoughs on Mapex?

They're not bad sounding kits. I have a Pro M maple snare from around 2007 or so that I got a great deal on.

I have liked some of their snares. I guess they are the Black Panther line? The...

Re: Am I the only one here that hated the Kick Port?

I'm not really a fan of them either.

I purchased a used kit a while back that had one on it. It came off rather quickly. I prefer a full reso head anyway.

This thing always seemed to me to be...
