Re: Ludwig Black Beauty

I have that top black beauty. It will cover a lot of ground, but so will the chrome over brass and aluminum models. It's a sound you'll recognize as it's on the radio all day. My honest opinion is...

Re: Anybody have that 'magic touch'?

As a guitar player I stopped breaking (correction) strings when I learned to angle my pick. Now they're dead long before they break.

As a drummer, I guess 3 1/2 years now, I've never broken...

Re: strange problem with leaning pedals!!!

Common issue on pedals with bottom plates. Just move it towards the direction it tilts in until it stays flat when you tighten it down. Moving it 3-4 times is just normal. For me anyway.

Re: I'm just a "feel" drummer so I don't need technique, right?

I'm a technique drummer, so I don't need feel.

Re: Earning your gear?

I have saved on the BD and toms myself, but if I could afford it I wouldn't hesitate to pick up a nice snare or two as working on and getting to know your snare I feel is so important for one's...

Re: Playing music no one else wants to.

I'dove to do some hard driving jazz fusion ala Karizma or Five Peace Band. I'll make it happen some day.

Re: Does your family understand?

I'm not even sure other musicians I play with understand. They mostly seem to do it for other reasons.

The new girlfriend is different though, she's respectful and wants to understand, and her...

Re: Overplaying

This is overplaying.

A little spice in something like this is no problem. It's just about choosing the spots wisely and playing with the right dynamic.This...

Re: What do you want your guitar player to know?

25 years on guitar and as I've been practicing drums a lot these last few years it's been apparent how little focus there really is on rhythmical skills in most guitar education. And certainly not...

Re: Parents won't let me buy a drum set

Sadly it's not unusual. When I came to my current job I have students that didn't have anything to drum om for two years. This offcourse should mean that their chops on the pad should be reasonably...

Re: Jazz excersises?

Hi-hat should be on 2 & 4.

Can you read rhythms by themselves.

If yes,

Pick one exercise e.g. first Syncopation page and play it on the snare with the left hand while keeping the ostinato...

Re: Learning to sight read

If you wana really get good at sight reading you need a good progressive reading book.

Before even playing with your sticks I recommend doing a couple of exercises.

1) Spell the pulse...

Re: Learning Double Bass

I'm not a metal player and don't really aspire to be super fast, but I do work a lot on double bass lately.

Just as with my hands in the beginning I focus on control and quality. I do all the...

Re: Drums easier than other instruments?

Learning the technicalities of each instrument is one thing, but learning musicality is the same no matter what instrument you play.

It might actually be harder for a drummer, because in most...

Re: Gretsch options - Gretsch experts - little help?

I have a six piece Catalina. The snares and the rest is top of the line. I do want a US custom kit in the long run, but this is what I could afford if I wanted all those drums and the majority of...

Re: Who do you think is the best drummer in the world?

Kids used to think Lars. Now it's Joey.

There is no best, but to my taste Vinnie seems to have widest and most competent combination across the board and unlike a lot of "drum heroes" I find his...

Re: How long did it take you to tune well?

I think the main thing is to not being afraid of experiementing and turning those lugs.

Even being a musician for 20+ years I found it really hard to tune a drum. Part of that was just not knowing...

Re: How to choose myself a snare.

I'm 36. I've played music for 30 years at this point, but didn't pick up the drums until a few years ago.

When I got my first kit the shells for the rest of the kit was the first things I saved...

Re: Wrist weights while practicing?

- Put a towel on your pad.
- Fold it until desired rebound.
-Play para-diddle-diddle with full wrist strokes.

Shold not take long to feel it.

I like this exercise because it gets the blood...

Re: Gretsch Cat Maple disappointment

When I started playing I got a Catalina maple kit because I had to cut corners somewhere. I obviously wanted nice cymbals, snares and other hardware so this seemed the most logical place to save...

Re: "Rosana shuffle" how long did it take?

I guess that today a fast shuffle like that isn't always of the highest priority.

When I was working on Rosanna I hadn't played that long(stil haven't), but what made a huge difference for me, and...

Re: Recommended books - where to start (after some hiatus)?

Jojo's DVD is just a technique encyclopedia. You need a routine to practice and use the techniques.

Stick control is nice to have and can be used as part of a technique routine.

Get an etude...

Re: Incredible Vinnie Colaiuta Ghostnote Groove

It grooves. The ghost notes are a big part of how it moves. I'll have some fun with it on tomorrows practice session.

Thanks

Re: What's with Zildjian hate??

They have got a bad rep with some because of lack of consistency, but for people who own only one set of cymbals and have the chance to try out a lot this might be a good thing.

The other one...
