Re: What's your latest purchase?

Just picked up my 2nd Sabian 22" HH Liquid Ride, the Chester Thompson Signature model. It has a slight Sound Control flange and sounds balanced and sweet. My first was a brilliant, and this one is...

Re: Do you have a piece of equipment that you've used since day 1 and still use it regularly?

I never put it together before, but Ralph Kester also invented this. I wish I still had it, and the drum. :(

BTW, this pre-dates the Big...

Re: Do you have a piece of equipment that you've used since day 1 and still use it regularly?

It's not the same one, but I've been using a smaller Ludwig Goldtone cowbell for most of my life. The pitch is almost an E, and it seems to fit perfectly in most cowbell songs. In one of my bands,...

Re: DW problem

The folks at DW take the relationships with their customers pretty seriously. I'd take it up with John Good directly, or Chris Lombardi, and pursue it further.

If you don't get satisfaction...

Handling pay & obligations while on the road

Borrowed from another thread...

I sort of recall giving a bunch of deposit slips to management, and they mailed them with the check to the bank. I think some of the guys had their checks sent...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

This is a good topic for its own thread, will start that and give my answer.

Re: Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz here!

The orchestras will get charts closer to their respective dates rather than sooner. Hopefully the conductors will also get our clicks, as the countoffs vary (having been assembled and spec'd by me...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

The union will step in for members doing non-union tour dates?? I wasn't aware of that. Almost every live date (and every tour) I've done has been non-union. Then again, I've never been fired from a...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

And yet another way that being a freelance musician differs from traditional employment: there are no policies regarding termination.

If a player is suddenly no longer a "good fit" (whatever that...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

That's true, probably for 99% of the gigs out there. Very few musicians are so talented or integral to a band, that they couldn't be replaced if desired or necessary, or if they got too uppity or...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

That's another aspect of how musical gigs differ from traditional employment norms: scheduled reviews aren't guaranteed for freelance musicians.

The money thing for musicians goes something...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

As usual, someone was able to take several paragraphs of me trying to explain, and make it succinct!

Knowing what someone else makes may be encouraging, or discouraging, and most likely isn't...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

That's the problem - there is no range for the field.

A fair question might be "what does Kenny Aronoff make touring with the BoDeans?" (although nobody but Kenny, his accountant, and artist...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

Amusing, but I flinch at his use of the words "taboo" and why is it so "frightening" to talk about finances. The reason pros don't discuss finances is because they vary so widely, not because it's...

Re: Funny the things that matter

For me, some things should match, others, not so much.

Like on my local kits, my cymbal stands are the same manufacturer and vintage. It happens that my snare stand is also from the same era...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

If a band is playing smaller venues, they probably need to do 4-6 shows a week just to make the tour pay for itself. Per diems , hotels, and a vehicle are a 7-day commitment, so 3 shows a week for...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

Nobody said Taylor's touring drummer is making $150 a show. I'm acquainted with her last two drummers (Matt B. and Al W.) and they never made that.

Also, "top-tier drummer" and "one of the...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

That's also true. Just as the pay varies, so do the players' perspectives and situations. One player will find that $1000/wk meets their needs and makes them happy, while another making $5000/wk will...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

This topic touches on my upcoming article in the December issue of DRUM! where I discuss negotiating fees. Without giving away the article, I will say that a musician's pay is based on the value they...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

Don't forget the manager's percentage, the booking agent's percentage, the promoter's percentage, the cost to book the venue, and the venue's percentage! That can easily take 40% or more right off...

Re: Is this statement about 'hired guns' kinda true or not..?

Salaries are completely subjective, and some artists are more/less generous than others. But "a top-tier drummer who was behind one of the largest pop artists in the world" making $1000/wk doesn't...

Re: Fixing Tempo Problems

That's a given, and sadly, some players (and singers) are out there on their own, thinking everyone should just follow whoever's leading at the moment... or that music has to breathe... yadda yadda...

Re: Fixing Tempo Problems

If you're the only one hearing the click - and you should be the only one - it's very easy to make that work.

#1 - Understand that your job is to play with the click, not the band. That may sound...

Re: It's the little things

A good idea... if you unbag your drums in that order. I just pull the bags off the cart and unbag them, and the kick is usually last. Then I put the floppy bags inside each other however they'll fit....
