Re: Your Moment of Glory

I have had the opportunity of playing a few times with various members of the Chantays. One time the lead guitarist in my surf band got sick suddenly and Gil Orr agreed to fill in for him. After the...

Re: Stick between index and middle finger

Bev Bevan does that too. I think it's because he was taught to play mallets in the orchestra.

Re: Albums that had a huge impact on your current playing?

I would have to say the first Bad Company LP. Simon Kirk gives a textbook lesson in how to play for the song.

Re: Is it a myth that certain drumming legends have an inimitable 'feel' on the kit?

I've seen Eric Clapton with three virtuoso drummers: Phil Collins, Steve Ferrone, and Steve Gadd. They all brought their individual style to the gig. I'm sure that Eric didn't tell them to try to...

Re: What drums intrigue you that you have NEVER owned

I've always wanted to take a Peavey Radial (I think that's what they're called) for a spin. They are built differently and look a little strange, but the sound is supposed to be terrific. I know that...

Re: Is made in the US really that much better?

Well, I haven't done any A/B comparison, but I heard that there's a sonic difference between a drum shell bade with Mahogany grown in Africa and that grown in Honduras. I would think that the same...

Re: What is the cleverest instruction given to you by a music director?

Not by a music director, but I was reading an interview with Art Blakey in Modern Drummer and he said, and I paraphrase: Don't worry if you make a mistake. Learn to do that mistake on purpose.

Re: Ringo Still Filling the House

I saw him in 2012. The band is the best cover band I've ever seen.

Re: Your weirdist gig?

Played a gig for the city once. (well actually twice) The guy said he heard us and wanted us to play. As were setting up in this big multi-purpose room at the local park, a work crew comes in with a...

Re: Advice re selling...

I think that the "perfectionist" comment is a little off-putting. While I might think of myself as a perfectionist in regards to my set-up, I'm aware that most other people see it as being...

Re: Gear you could afford but never owned

I've never owned either a splash cymbal or a china cymbal. I never lost any sleep over it.

Re: Drum/music Terminology: Downbeat

My understanding is that in 4/4 the downbeat is on the "1" and the backbeats are on "2" and "4". I've never used the term upbeat.

Re: Drum Gear for an 8/9 year old

I can vouch for the Dream hi-hats. I got a pair without listening to them first because I was just looking to use them on my practice kit. I've used them on gigs and have gotten positive feedback.

Re: If you had a drum tech, would it change your set-up?

My setup probably wouldn't change. What would change would be the frequency of head changes and tuning as well as general maintenance.

Re: 12" or 14"

I have a Stage Custom with 10-12-16-22 sizes. I mainly use the 12-16 for fills and only use the 10" tom for those big grandiose fills just before the final chorus. I don't need to have it but it's...

Re: No Talent Hack, But Loving It....

I disagree with this. I don't think that ist is deliberate. I think that tribalism is imbeded in our DNA. As a kid growing up our family moved a lot and I was often the "new guy". Everywhere it was...

Re: Forum Views Drum Gear vs. Forum Views Drum Technique..

Concerning the "money beat" for bass players: I would say that it's just quarter notes. I saw a video of Carol Kaye and she said that the producer wanted her to play straight quarters and it was...
