Re: "Jazz Kit" Poll: Yamaha or Gretsch

I'd certainly go 1-ply for jazz.

Re: At which point do polyrhythms stop sounding cool and start sounding academic?

Really?

What happened to challenging and improving oneself just for the joy of it and hoping to influence the world in the same open minded an positive way?

Re: At which point do polyrhythms stop sounding cool and start sounding academic?

Bombastic modern rock and prog stuff is one thing.

There's a lot of orchestral music with a lot of changes where one wouldn't really think of it in those terms.

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

It's just such a big subject and if I was siting down and teaching someone the ideas would be highly customized.

It's good to do some of that in the beginning. Having some pure exercises that are...

Re: "Jazz Kit" Poll: Yamaha or Gretsch

I play a Catalina maple every day as that's my kit.

Is it the USA Custom that I'm saving up for?

No.

What it does have is a bit of that Gretsch character.

Neither one of these are...

Re: At which point do polyrhythms stop sounding cool and start sounding academic?

It'll always be a taste thing.

I don't much like most "prog" music at all.

I am however sure I could use any rhythmical, melodic or harmonic device in a way I found pleasing and musical.

A...

Re: Classic kits that sound... horrible.

Let's hope they find a more responsible and caring patron next time.

Re: Classic kits that sound... horrible.

Sounds like almost every house kit I've played.

Well, not that old, so removal of "muffling"(10 lbs og duct tape) and tuning makes it passable.

30 mins of work and it's a new kit.

I didn't...

My cat is adorable.

She hates drums.

Re: Damage control: take care of your stuff

If you want to tighten things down I'm sure it'll help.

No problem for me, though. My china is upside down at a steep angle and it stays in place well enough for me.

They say the older version...

Re: Tune Bot - Worthwhile or Not?

Nothing wil ever take away the need to use yourown ears and develop your own taste.

This is a tool and it offers a lot in regards to consistency, saving time, head changes, experimenting, save...

Re: Trick VMT Pub Kick

Yeah.

Don't remember who, but someone on the forum got a 20x8 BD, I think, and raved about it. That's how I found out about them.

I really like to hear some clips with more distant micing to...

Re: Order of study: moeller, finger technique, push-pull

I can't really say anything useful inside that paradigm.

Todd pretty much said it. It's the short version, though.

Re: Trick VMT Pub Kick

It's gonna be a while, as it's all about saving up for those USA Cutoms now.

If the recording is true, then having that Sojourner kit and even some more sizes would be a nice option to have on the...

Re: Trick VMT Pub Kick

There are a lot of factors involved.

Just not a priority right now, but based on sound I've been thinking about one of these things. https://www.footdrums.com/drum-kits/

Re: Trick VMT Pub Kick

Two mics could simply mean one for house and one for recording.

Re: Damage control: take care of your stuff

I don't really see the problem.

I usually have to top felt and wing nut on, but it's probably more for looks. The exception being if I'm using my 8" splash and decide to hit it a bit hard. It will...

Re: Trick VMT Pub Kick

There are several things like this out. They're not really replacements, but I'm a fan, filling in that room between a cajon and a bop size kit with whatever works for a situation.

Re: When the band you're auditioning for,..

If you're not a hired hand for a certain project, but actually going to join a band blind then auditioning is a numbers game. Doesn't matter if it's not working for you or the rest. It will not be...

Re: What makes a great drummer?

If you serve the music and it just works, sonds and feels good, the it's good drumming.

If you can throw in something unique, cool and creative without detracting, but rather add to the whole,...

Re: Beginner double bass drumming - where do I start?

It depends what you want to do with it.

Though I work my double pedal quite a bit, the modern metal constant fast singles through entire sections or whole songs stuff is not my thing.

In...
