Re: Stan Lynch

I love Stan Lynch.

I've always loved how he could take a simple beat and make it sound like a million dollars.

And yes, he's a successful songwriter and producer for other artists now.

Re: Next Biographical Film of Musical Artist?

Well, the thread is about Hollywood stye movies, not documentaries.

I did check out the Balin doc on Amazon. It's s shame it doesn't go particularly in depth. He comes off a bit of a grumpy old...

Re: Next Biographical Film of Musical Artist?

Though I think I'd rather see:

Pink Floyd, though it would be hard to pull off without making it a very dark and depressing movie.

Jefferson Airplane I can see Hugh Jackman playing Marty...

Re: Next Biographical Film of Musical Artist?

I'd have to think Led Zeplin.

As a highly popular iconic band, the movie would sell millions of tickets on the name alone.

It could be interesting, as following Jimmy Page from studio...

Re: Guitar Center opening 6 stores in 2019

Because most people only read the headlines and never dived deeper.

Even in those articles about doom and gloom, GC was still opening stores, an still showing strong sales.

The going under...

Re: Kenny Jones Ripping it Up With The Small Faces

^ This.

Pete knew no one could replace Moon, so he wanted someone who just couldn't be looked at as a replacement, but instead a new direction.

Prior to Moon's death, the Who had slowed way...

Re: Ever had a band or genre of music that you shouldn't like...but you do?

Larry, I think you're taking the "shouldn't" too literally. I do believe he meant in a more light-hearted tone.

Not that you shouldn't because someone made a rule, but shouldn't in that it's not...

Re: albums with missing drum kit elements

That was actually a thing in the late 70's and early 80's.

Numerous songs and/or albums in that era were recorded one piece of the drum kit at a time.

Mixing programed parts and real parts...

Re: Ever had a band or genre of music that you shouldn't like...but you do?

I do recall many years of not being able to tell anyone I loved Journey for fear of extreme riddle.

Now, it's like, the complete opposite, and everyone likes them.

Re: Ever had a band or genre of music that you shouldn't like...but you do?

Well, I generally don't care much for pop, or very much rap/hiphop, or what's ever "popular" but I love Linkin Park.

I saw them twice. Both times I was the oldest person in the arena by far. But...

Re: albums with missing drum kit elements

Yup.

There are at least 3 crashes before the vocals come in. And many, many more throughout the song.

Granted, they are smaller, thinner crashes, so they blend into the track more than they...

Re: piccolo snare (pros and cons)

I don't think one needs a particular size snare to play reggae.

It's more about how you tune the drum and how you strike it IMHO.

Re: albums with missing drum kit elements

In the 90's, playing in an industrial influenced rock band, I realized at one point I didn't touch the ride, so I took it off, and did many gigs without it.

Eventually, the singer asked me to put...

Re: albums with missing drum kit elements

The on the song "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow, there are NO cymbals, because the drummer was asked to come up drum parts that didn't use cymbals.

As mentioned, Lars Ulrich didn't have a ride...

Re: Drumming for a living

IMHO, yes.

Playing Mustang Sally for the 5 millionth time in a crummy bar to people who are too drunk to even care isn't much different than any other day job, IMHO.

With the caveat that...

Based on another thread, my very unpopular opinion is

Teaching music is not the same career as playing drums.

But that's just me.

Re: Ever had a band you just couldn't like

Sure. Plenty.

Given my love for The Who, Pink Floyd, classic rock, prog and good singers, one would assume I'm a huge fan of Queen. But I'm not. I have nothing against them, it doesn't do...

Perhaps.

Some may also just not have the personality for it.

I moved to Los Angeles with the attitude I was going to make it as a professional drummer or die trying.

After many years and...

Re: Was there a golden age of drum manufacturing

I'd say now, and going back the last 10-15 years.

The fact is if you took just about any mid-line kit made today, put in a time machine, and took it back to the 60's70/80's, it would be...

Re: Drumming for a living

I think one has to first define what is making music from music and what is not.

Is teaching music drumming? Sure, it may involve drumming, but...
