Re: Mounting toms on bass drum vs virgin bass drum

Why choose when you can have both?

Up until a few months ago I had been mounting my rack off a cymbal stand, but have since been using a Ludwig Atlas rail mount. Just replaced the two top kick...

Re: Stage Etiquette article

Absolutely all of this! It's my biggest gripe of other drummers/bands when playing out BY FAR.

On the "rushing the stage" side of the coin ... it's never happened to me (because I get my shit...

Re: Anyone regret having your drum cut down?

I had a 22x18 cut down to a 22x14 a few years back and don't regret it at all.

The 4" cut came off the batter side so the spurs wouldn't need to be messed with.

Re: Time away from kit

Well, the fact that you're worried about your lack of kit time makes me think you shouldn't worry about it too much - but only as long as you stay worried about it!

I had been a fiend about...

Re: Anyone ever regret wrapping a drum set?

In a past life, I had a frankenkit that I wanted to gig with. The bass drum was a sweet Tama Superstar from the '80s, and a rack and a floor tom that were pretty crappy stencil drums.

So I got...

Re: How can this be possible?

A drummer friend of mine noticed a similar effect when playing a lefty kit (he's a righty). Only, what he noticed was that his left foot on bass drum made his pocket a little cleaner, if not quite as...

Re: FU stroke!!!!!

Andy, you're a friggin' MACHINE!

And blowing the doors off of Rebel Yell, too! That had serious authority and punch.

Re: Who has inspired the most to make people play drums?

Totally stereotypical and some may not believe it, but Ringo actually was the guy who got me craving to play drums. I became a Beatles freak in 3rd grade ('76) and was staring at pictures of his...

Re: Anyone ever go from a 22" to a 24" kick?

My kit was made by a local guy using Keller shells and originally it had a 22" with a 13x9 rack on it (plus two floors). Some years later I decided I wanted a 24" so I had the same guy make it for...

Re: Do you necessarily like to play the drums to the music you like?

I should probably note that prog and fusion this math rock ain't. If it were, I might not sound so curmudgeonly about it. There's a whole lot more going on with Return To Forever (for example) than...

Re: Do you necessarily like to play the drums to the music you like?

As a drummer, I'm pretty much always playing in some loud noise-rock band making extensive use of odd-meters, and I've been rolling like this for over 25 years now. It is great fun and is a style...

Re: "Pulling the sound out of the drum..."

Playing off the head is like what Larry was describing where the stick gets off the head immediately so it doesnít interfere with the vibrating head at all. Itís sorta like the opposite of burying...

Re: Brands of whatever

I insist on Ludwig snares because I love Imperial lugs. I don't even care what the shells are made out of or if the badges are still intact. That particular Art Deco cut just visually hits the spot...

Re: Ludwig Black Beauty

Yep, it is. I put them on my LM402 and LB417. No drilling, no fuss, no muss.

FWIW, I didn't *hate* the P-85, and there is still a fairly bare-bones vibe about the P-86 ... I just really like them.

Re: Do You want to become a particular type band drummer or a session drummer? why?

Totally this. These were the reasons I took up playing. I wanted to be in a band making music that spoke to me in the same way, and finding a way to make the drum parts matter in a way that was...

Re: Members whom you've met in person

So do you not have that warehouse space anymore? That was a great time, and the most amazing rock space I've ever seen!

Up until recently, you were the only forum member I'd met in real life.

Re: I think I wore out my drum key

For sure. My first kit was a Ruether (stencil kit), which had these horrible tom holders that required a drumkey for making adjustments. I over-cranked and split many drumkeys by trying to keep my...

Re: I think I wore out my drum key

Wearing out a drumkey? Sounds like a technique issue to me. I imagine a qualified drumkey teacher could straighten you out on that ;)

Re: Best Compliment from an Audience Member

I always kind of liked the way Neil Peart described is reaction to compliments and criticisms, saying that he takes them all with a grain of salt. If he got too caught up in all the praise heaped on...

Re: Ride Position

I'm same as the OP - started on a 2up-1dn kit with my ride over the floor tom, but have long since reconfigured to the 1up-2dn and largely left my ride where it was. There's nothing "wrong" with...

Re: Band members who faff at rehearsals

Would that be because of a frustration at those wanting to try new things at practice/rehearsal, or because of a frustration at having that activity so frowned upon? There's a time and place for most...
