Re: If only you knew what I know ;)

I doubt it’s Bruford, but it’d be great if I’m wrong.

I went to a Bruford clinic years ago and it was excellent. No sarcasm or tongue lashings that I recall.

Re: Practice it until it "feels good."

Yeah, that’s it.

+1 for the zen-like experience. It’s quite a satisfying feeling when you get there. How do you know when you’re there? I know it sounds goofy, but seriously, you’ll just know.

Re: Hi hat question

Yeah, you’d think so, wouldn’t you? At least, I did.

Strangely, my Sabian Flat Hats (the bottom cymbal has no bell and has 3 big holes drilled in it) still need the angle to sound good. After...

Re: Need to vent- stressful rehearsal

You successfully faked “Tom Sawyer”?!!!

I bow in awe in your general direction.

Re: Spy shots!

I’m pretty sure those snares would sound significantly different in Canadian air. It could be tricky marketing if you don’t get international facts. And I know you’ll be amazed at my selflessness,...

Re: Do you color coordinate your clothes to your kit at concerts?

I think you should follow Keith Moon’s lead:

Re: A revolting development

Hmmm. A familiar quip from a Womb forum member. Is that you, or did you just knick the line? (Which is great, BTW, I’ve used it too.)

Re: Why Would You Want to Feel Low end on Your Butt?

Ha! Too funny! Definitely gets my vote for line of the day.

Re: Facebook-only gear companies

My first impression would be “well, looks like Buddy’s working out of his garage.”

Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

But I’m still a fan of bricks-and-mortar stores where I can try...

Re: Who do you think is the best drummer in the world?

This guy might be the best busking drummer. I see him all the time downtown. Dude can solo forever in odd times and make it sound and feel effortless.

Re: DW vs Ayotte??

Yeah, it sounds like both kits are pretty sweet, so I’d go with the Ayottes mostly because they’re less common.

Re: Looking while playing

A musician who doesn’t look at his instrument while playing appears much more proficient to an audience. And even more so to other musicians. Of course, not looking is a lot easier with almost any...

Re: How to improve the left hand.

Put your right hand in your pocket and leave it there. All day. All the time.

Eat with your left. Open doors with your left. Put keys in locks with your left. Use your mouse with your left....

Re: Double bass used in professional situation....

I practice double pedal stuff pretty regularly, but it’s mostly just for technical exercises. When it comes to actually playing actual songs, I hardly use it. Except sometimes in a rare fill. But...

Re: How long did it take you to tune well?

I’ve not heard of that tuning technique before. I usually leave the heads on the drums.

Har har har.

Re: Who do you think is the best drummer in the world?

You guys don’t know a serious question when you read it!

The best drummer in the world is the guy who inspired me to play when I was a kiddie.

Re: Smooth Hissing Hi Hat

As you guessed in your initial post, recording technique has a major effect on the sound. Well, more accurately, I mean processing of the recording. If you slap a compressor on (a recording of) an...

Re: For those in cover bands, how much do you stray from the original drum parts?

This topic comes up pretty regularly, and every time I’m amazed that so many people want to pretend to be somebody else.

Copying somebody else note for note is a great way for beginners to...

Re: lastest Johnny Rabb Videos

Very nice! Drums sound great, and I love the almost symmetrical setup.

Is he throwing in little bits of one-handed rolls, but both hands one-handed-rolling at the same time (if that makes any...

Re: How long from complete beginner to gigging?

Find a band with players a little better than you are. That’ll kick you in the arse every rehearsal, and you’ll improve faster. (Or so goes the old theory. Which I believe in.)

Re: How long from complete beginner to gigging?

It was a long time ago, but I think I went 3 years from absolute beginner to playing my first gig, which was in a pit orchestra for a musical theatre company.

That seems crazy to me now, all...
