Check out the Ludwig Epics. They sound amazing for a fraction more.
They are 6 ply maple inners and birch outers (hybrid).
I am thrilled with my choice. Oh, and they look as good as they sound.

I have a Ludwig Epic 7 piece, (3 up/2 down), with a virgin bass drum. The ride toms mount to tom holders that mount to cymbal stands, 1 double and 1 single tom holder. It's a pain! Getting the tom...

I can't honestly speak for the Pearls, but DUDE, get the Epic! I have the pro beat kit with the added 8" tom. Remo clear emperor batters and clear ambassadors for resos. WOW!!

Here's another vote for Ludwig Epic kit. I have a Pro Beat 3 up, 2 down (8,10,12,14,16). Clear Emporors over Ambassadors. Big, deep, rich tone, with perfect sustain. Just changed out the Pinstripes....

I am still blown away with my Epic Pro Beat. Tones and depth are amaizing. I'm curious to know what head or heads you used to set up the snare. This is the only piece I'm not totally happy with yet.

Cudo's to the dude suggesting the dollar bill under the snares. I played around with that idea. Ended up with a piece of paper under the snares all the way to one side. Paper is approximately 2"x2",...

I received my Epic Pro Beat in March. I am still blown away with the sound. I have added an 8" tom recently. With the proper heads and Dilligent tuning the Epics sound amazing! Even the 8" tom sounds...

For the inquiries about ludwig epic component (add on) drums, I just received the 8" tom for my Pro Beat kit that I ordered early March. It took 41/2 months! I guess they really do exist. Music...

Ordered the Epic 8" component tom early March. I STILL DON'T HAVE IT!!!

I received my new Epic Pro Beat 3/6/10. Could not believe the depth and tone of the 10" tom. The next day I ordered the 8" component tom. I've been told late June or early July. This kit is amazing...

I have the Pro Beat in Mahogany Burst. My 1st kit in 25 years. The sound of this kit is mindblowing! Need remo clear pins.
I've had dufficulty posting a thread. I'm new to the site....
