Re: 2 rack toms vs 2 floor toms

I'm a 2 up, 1 down guy. I have my 10" and 12" toms mounted to the left of the bass to allow for ride positioning, and I have a 14x16" floor tom.

I don't like 14" floor toms, since I find them to...

Re: PDP and SJC vs Tama?

What does the Platinum kit have that the Silverstar doesn't? They're both mid-range kits with similar price points. The hardware is pretty much the same, and they both have suspension mounts....

Re: PDP and SJC vs Tama?

Well quality wise, the PDP kit is a step sideways from your Tama Silverstar kit. They won't sound "better", but they will sound different. And if the warmer tones of the maple is what you're after,...

Welcome to the forums! :)
Wouldn't mind seeing pics of that kit.

Re: Losing an eye to a hi hat rod, injury and prevention

Could it be that we've stumbled upon the next great drumming innovation? Muffled hi-hat rods! Stick a pillow on the end, and not only will your eye be safe, but your hi hats will double as a place to...

Re: Favorite throw off and why?

And here I was reading this thread, surprised no one had mentioned the Tama throw. I have 2 snares with this throw off, and I gotta say I prefer it to most others I've seen.

Re: New Guru!

Man, what a positively gorgeous snare. Really diggin' the tone from her... Consider me jealous.

Andy, as usual, you guys are spot-on. I WILL own a Guru snare one day.

Re: Drum spacing issues.

I'll start off by saying that when I got my first real kit, I was in the same boat as you. I kept my throne low, and my toms were hard to place because of my bass drum. So I did what you mentioned,...

Re: Bringing the beater back

I think that's awesome. Like I said, I'd never even considered that possibility, so I think that coming from that standpoint really brings a unique perspective on how to play the bass drum in...

Re: Bringing the beater back

You know, I'm the opposite of you. I never compared the bass drum to a tom like that, nor did I ever even think to.

I myself do both, depending on what I'm doing, or what the music calls for.

Re: Drinking and Drumming

Nope, no drinking and drumming here. Not only because it makes me sloppy, but then you risk damaging something with an errant strike.

Re: My kit is coming together

Sweet looking kit! I have to agree with Larry: that's a steal of a deal for $1250! What are you thinking about for crashes?

Re: Does your gear HAVE to be the same brand or do you mix/match?

I don't have a single matching component to my kit. The stands are all different brands, I have 4 cymbal brands up there, Aquarian/Evans heads, Tama kit, and whatever brand my snare happens to be.

Re: What's your favorite drumset category? Drums, cymbals or hardware

Cymbals, without question. I love the variations and nuances found in Turkish cymbals... The journey for new cymbal sounds lasts a lifetime.

Re: When disaster strikes: Your opinion

After my pets and family, well, the drums can burn. Maybe I'd grab a few significant cymbals, but otherwise, it's as others have said; documents, pictures, and maybe a few other things, time allowing.

Re: Your approach to supporting a solo.

For me, it depends on which instrument is playing the solo as well. If it's the guitar, I'll accent along with his phrasing. Piano? Lay back a bit more, while still accenting the really tasty bits....

Re: What method of drum video critiquing do you go by?

I tend to comment on what I like for videos. I very rarely offer critique, even if specifically asked for. In those cases, I usually just don't say anything.

Re: Renting kits to try out

I agree with Les here. Renting kits can get fairly expensive for sure, and when I go to my local music stores, every single one lets me tune, dampen, and play the drums all for free. Heck, they even...

...Musicians? I thought we were drummers? Lol.

To stay on topic: Acrolite. That beauty will work for everything and more.

Re: Intersting article on Beats Headphones

Yep, gotta say I agree. Beats are an overhyped POS brand made popular by marketing. My Sennheiser HD 280 Pros are infinitely superior by comparison, and a lot of audiophiles think even those are...

Re: Playing others' kits

Yikes! I'd be miserable if I had to play that kit. My band just played last in a 4 band show, but since it was my band that organized the entire event, I had the benefit of using my own kit, while...

Re: First gig in 2.5 years!

Hey man, congrats! I'm also somewhat of an infrequent gigger myself, as my band is an eclectic group of individuals with lives, but I always love getting that chance to play.

I hope it goes well...
