Re: Joe Morello: Technique is Expressing What’s In Your Mind

I am the world's biggest Joe Morello fanboy, and this is one of the reasons why. Joe had the technique (I would argue more so than Buddy) but was also a supremely musical drummer, probably because he...

Re: Jazz Comping Bass Drum

Yeah, you and tcspears both keyed into the main thing that bugs me: that darn one. It's a crutch, bot for comping and in odd-time playing.

I think the major problem is that to play well you have...

Re: Jazz Comping Bass Drum

Undoubtedly true. I'm more logical than I am emotion-driven (I blame years of being a programmer). So I tend to over-analyze things. But I'm working on it!

Jazz Comping Bass Drum

Another stupid question from me: jazz drummers, how active is your bass drum?

I record all my practices, probably because I'm a masochist, and I notice when I'm comping with my left hand my right...

Re: Brush technique

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. When I say I "play brushes like sticks" I mainly mean grip. I use matched American grip. So when I started playing brushes I just held them in American grip and like...

Brush technique

Just curious what people think of various brush techniques. I was watching the Ed Soph Evans series and he proposes one based on 'sideways Moeller'. More than anything it reminds me of DJ scratching:...

Sticking?

I am pretty sure this is Band in a Box, but does anybody know what the sticking would be to actually play this?

Unless I'm hearing it entirely wrong...

Re: The state of pop music

I just can't agree. I know it's the kind of thing we're supposed to tell ourselves so we won't get depressed about the state of affairs, but it's pretty provably not true. We live in a very...

Pete Phipps?

I wasn't able to find an entry for Pete(r) Phipps so thought I'd create one. As a huge XTC fan growing up I heard a lot of his (and Prairie Prince's) drumming and think both are really underrated...

Re: Long, Detailed in depth review of the Taye GoKit

LOL yeah that's probably a good place to start, don't know why that didn't occur to me. Thanks!

FTR, my biggest gripe with the Taye kit is that all the preset 'bundles' seem to be weird sizes. I...

Re: Max Roach solo (need help)

Interesting. He plays something similar starting around 4:56 but the rolls sound slightly different. The first ones sound tight and closed but they don't seem to have enough rebounds to be buzzes....

Re: Long, Detailed in depth review of the Taye GoKit

Hi thanks for the review. Does anybody know where these are available? The usual suspects show it "out of stock" either permanently or temporarily, and I can only find them on eBay.

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

Ummm .... I googled Elvin Jones Ginger Baker and got this:

"On the other hand, exposed to some jackass — i.e., Cream’s Ginger Baker — dishonoring his beloved instrument of choice, Jones shifted...

Re: How to make success on YouTube as a musician

Nah. You're just offering a dissenting opinion. You aren't disproving anything. That's not how opinions work.

Bass players have this exact same argument. It's funny that anyone would argue about...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

I come off way too critical in writing. It's a fun song to play, just when I play covers I feel I should try not to stray too much and doing that roll over and over can be boring. But I'd much rather...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

You're right, but there's an interview where John Lennon claims the name 'The Beatles' came to him on a flaming pie. In both cases you have to wonder how much of what the guy says is really true.

Re: How to make success on YouTube as a musician

I'd hate to end up like that Nobel Prize Winning scientist who is now unemployed for making a harmless private joke about women ...

But isn't that just the lamest? I have nothing against women...

Re: Drum fads: Past, present...and future?

As a Gretsch owner, I really dislike the 'silver sealer'. It smells terrible (smacks you in the face when you reskin your drums) and like a black car every smudge, fingerprint, and light scratch...

Amen. After watching that Dream Theater audition show I was curious to see what kind of stuff Mangini was playing with them. First video was "AWESOME MIKE MANGINI DRUM SOLO!!!!!" The video was about...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

Unless I'm mistaken, his jazz solo stuff was strictly after his rock career, right?

I mean the guy has jazz chops ... now. Don't know if he makes me 'feel' anything, but that's kind of a curse...

Re: Bitter Ginger Baker slating Zeppelin and Bonham - again

What's interesting about all this is my band plays "White Room". Baker's rolls in that song are so boring. It's the same roll over and over and over. I've been told many times that he was a great...

Yep. It's a loving view of him, because like so many others one of the first jazz songs I could actually play was Moanin' (which I argue is his most tasteful performance, but there are probably...

Re: Art Blakey

I kind of think of Art as the rock drummer's jazz drummer. Every recording I hear from him he's just pounding and thwacking and kicking and thumping. Don't think I've heard a single ghost note in...
